You don’t want to stop filthy entertainment who objectify women but want society to stop rapes?
You don’t want to plant and nurture even a single tree but want pollution free environment?
धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः|
Dharma protects those who protect it.
Dharmo rakshati, meaning that dharma offers protection.
The word Dharma is formed from the root dhr and literally means to hold, sustain and maintain a thing in its being. There is no accurate translation of the word into English but we may have a glimpse of its vast scope by translating Dharma as right action, right conduct, virtue, moral law, etc. Every form of life, every group of people has its Dharma, which is the law of its being. Dharma or virtue is conformity with the truth of things; adharma or vice is opposition to it.
If we choose to live a life guided by the principles of Dharma, then we are assured of that protection. This understanding used to be ingrained in Hindu’s thinking from childhood as one grows up in India. Not anymore as such profound verses are non-secular and cannot be taught in schools!
How convenient it would have been if the phrase contained only the first part: Dharmo rakshati. It would be a simple statement analogous to saying parents love children. It would be a clear one-way street. But it simply is not so! The other part of the phrase is: rakshitaha. This part brings individuals and society into the action.
That we human beings need protection is understandable. But rakshithaha implies that the concept itself needs protection too. If you are not performing your duties towards self, family, society, nature and nation, do not expect dharma/culture to protect you.
When a large number of people in a society violate Dharma, then the society as a whole is in danger resulting in major upheaval. This was the state of affairs that led to the Mahabharata war.
So when you see issues around you, ask yourself:
Are you following your dharma? (Dharma is not religion.धर्म is that which sustains the society, protects the society from decadence, downfall and destruction. Whereas ‘Religion’ is strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny. Religion may lead to superstitions, delusions and tunnel vision but Dharma cannot.)
Are you performing your duties towards others?
No. So why do you expect everything in place?
Once a dharma is perishing, you too are perishing. Blaming culture for own mistakes is foolishness.
Start following your duties. Be bold enough to take hard decisions. Step by step. And see the magic.
Marut Ji,
Namaste,
Beautifully explained the most important thing which is widely missing in most of us(including me, I am trying my best to get on track).
May I request you to please also share the secret of your knowledge like the names of Gurus or Shastras from where you get such important knowledge. It will spread Dharma only.
