Ridiculous! All myth!

This is the first hand response we get from our educated teens. This shows our society’s negligence for our Itihas! This is how Nastikta is groomed in next generation. And I blame TV serial versions of Itihas for it as they show the things in more comic way than natural! It is on our shoulders to read and research and explain facts! Our next generation is surrounded by communists, market forces and soul vultures. Attack on Bharatiya Psyche from three directions! The world war is already ON in mind-plane!

I often ask my friends to read Ramayana and Mahabharata in original. When I say, in original, it is not just the text translation of Valmiki rachit ramayana or Ved Vyas rachit Mahabharata but about reading them in sanskrit. Yes, it may not happen in first go so we must read it again and again. It should be part of daily routine. 

I am sure, when we re-read it for 2-3 times, we will be able to grasp the ideas behind some cryptic texts. 

दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च |
रामो राज्यमुपासित्वा ब्रह्मलोकं गमिष्यति || १-१-९७

“Having served the kingdom for ten thousand years and another one thousand years, i.e. for a total of eleven thousand years, Rama will go to the abode of Brahma…

“Rama ruled for 11000 years!”

How come this is possible when we know normal human life span is aroun 100 years? If you are living Yogic life, it may go up to 200 or 300 years. Max, there are examples of 400 years. But 11000 years! 60000 years! 

Well, for that, we need to study Surya Siddhanta, Jyotish and Panchang. 

Instead going into complex time calculation, I will quote Mahabharata here:

तथा भारत धर्मेषु धर्मज्ञैरिह दृश्यते । अहोरात्रं महाराज तुल्यं संवत्सरेण ह।

तथैव वेदवचनं श्रूयते नित्यदा विभो। संवत्सरो महाराज पूर्णो भवति कृच्छ्रतः ।।

 – Vana Parva, 52 –23-24

भीम-युधिस्ठिर संवाद:’भरतवंशी महाराज!, धर्मशास्त्रमें धर्म परायण पुरुषोका एक दिन-रात एक संवत्सर समान देखा गया है! वैदिक वचन भी यही कहता है की कृच्छ्र  व्रत के अनुष्ठान से एक वर्ष एक दिन में पूर्ण होता है!”

[कृच्छ्र व्रत = Read मनु स्मृति  for reference. Basically, कृच्छ्र means तप से उत्पन्न हुई तितिक्षा वृत्ति…which is only possible to develop in certain age by तपोवन शिक्षण.

कृच्छ्र :

पुं० [सं० √कृत्+रक्, छकार, आदेश] १. कष्ट। दुःख।एक प्रकार का व्रत। जिसमें पंचगव्य खाकर दूसरे दिन उपवास, किया जाता है। वि० कष्ट-साध्य।]

If we say that Rama ruled for 11,000 years, according to this calculation,

He had ruled for 31 years!! (11000 / 360 on the premise that the sun moves at the rate of 1 degree a day)

Look at Rama’s life. From Sita’s version in Sundhara kanda we know that Rama went on Vanavasa in his 25th year.

25+ 14 years in exile = 39.

He ascended the throne on his 39th year.

If he is to have ruled for 11,000 years, then according to Ahoreva samvatsar, it comes to 31 years.

Add 31 years to 39 when he ascended the throne. 

That means he ruled till his 70th year!

Not everyone lives such crowded hours. It shows how dedicated Rama was for this rule. He shows how Dashratha lived dharma aligned life.

For Ram’s rule, Valimiki used the word:   राज्यमुपासित्वा 

That means, Ram took his rule as Upasana and for all those years, he acted on welfare of the land with single-focused mindset. 

Therefore we have to use our discriminatory sense of perception and interpretation while dealing with such intriguing references or passages, impossible to reason out . While interpreting the past we have to bear in mind the age of the earth and age of life for which we have Surya Siddhanta guidance. If we are to take the meaning as we know it on face value in our limited perception, then we will be in for wrong conclusions. Not only that, we will be also making this vast body of knowledge of Veadanta and Vedanga put into ridicule.
