To degrade value of Veda(s) in the eyes of Indians, East India company spent Rs 9 lacs in around 1860s. It was the time when East India Company funded orientalists and indologists started their work to devaluing Veda(s). And the motive was conversion. Make everyone Christian!
Why conversion? For efficient administration over newly created Christian herds whose center of faith is Church and who cannot protest British administration.
In Sanskrit fraternity, monier williams English-Sanskrit dictionary is famous. Here is what monier williams had to say about his purpose of writing dictionary:
Sanskrit was so much in our veins that for conversion, they had to write dictionary so that they can publish their scriptures in Sanskrit!
Educational Evangelists: The one who use Education as a weapon for conversion.
Those learning Sanskrit must have come across this well known dictionary. It is by Monier Williams.
Very few of us know the real motive of him and his master Dr. Duff.
When Orientalists failed in conversion goal using Sanskrit based biblical literature , Bentinck changed official policy and took reverse turn, started education in English.
“Looking back on these years. Duff later wrote. “It now
appeared that the choice could only lie between . . . Sanscrit
. . . and English. The determination of this choice involved
the decision of one of the momentous practical questions connected with the ultimate evangelization of India. . . . The
question was ‘Which shall hereafter be established as the language
of learning in India 1 Which will prove the most effective instrument of a large. liberal and enlightened education l’ The wrong
determination of so vital a question. at the outset, would have
greatly retarded . . . every subsequent movement. It was not,
therefore. without earnest prayer to God for counsel and direction,
that a decision was attempted.”
In one of his book’s preface, Monier dedicate his work to Dr Duff like this
