Chanakya: Yes. The public will revolt if one has to raise a huge army for a war that comes once in life time. Public gets dissatisfied with the govt if the taxes go beyond the tolerable threshold. When the public develop apathy towards their rulers/govt, enemy doesn’t have to indulge in a war to win the kingdom. That is why I suggest we build an nonsalaried army.
When we develop patriotism in the citizens and offer them military training, they become nonsalaried army in the time of need. We also need to instill dharmic-fervor in them. Religious rituals are part of every individual’s life. So we need to develop patriotism intertwined with their religious/dharmic lifestyle. One cannot have patriotism unless one’s belief system is rooted in the lands they live in {KEY POINT}. That is why the need of the hour is to intertwine hindu dharma with these land. Land without religion is like a palace without foundation. Religion is the concept that uplifts animism into humanism and humanism into God-consciousness.
Bring together every citizen between ages 16 and 40 of every village into one place on a regular basis. Give them military training. Make it a sportive event. Instill discipline while training them in military skills. Make them sing patriotic songs. Identify suitable instructors in each village. This should not appear as an activity done for the state. It should appear as a sportive event for the benefit and entertainment of public. The king must establish indirect control on these village committees and encourage them as necessary.
Such activities instill unity and friendship among villagers. In times of need the villages will not only become self-protective but also offer trained army to king’s battles. This is an army without salary or state-budget. It has unlimited capacity (numbers).
In addition to this a salaried army will always be in the control of the king for unforeseen situations. The people’s army will act as an addendum to the regular army.

Team Sports : Essential Life-Recreation’s Ancient Roots

A friend was asking: what is best way to turn youth productive? Save them from depression and suicidal mentality?

Bring them to sports ground!~ Real मनोरंजन is replaced by toxic life-consuming मनोरंजन ! Introduce them to sports! Team sports!

Recreation is important for all. If there is any मनोरंजन activity which is open and accessible to all, irrespective of age, gender and race, it is sports. Esp. team sports.

Roots of प्राणवर्धक team sports is very old. When we claim origin or existence of Hockey during Krishna’s time, self-hating Indians suffering from inferiority complex , will mock it.

Sports: Bhagwad Gita perspective

Take any Indian native sports, it is all about team and prana movements. All body parts are used. Unlike modern games where either hand or leg are focused.
How wonderful that in me, the infinite ocean of consciousness, waves of jivas (individual souls) rise, sport for a while and disappear according to their nature.
~ Yoga Vasistha Sara VI.8

Life is a wonderful game! Play it boisterously!

And you realize ‘Life is a game’ only when you play real sports on ground! 🙂

That is how Krishna made army out of Gokul youth! By playing hockey!

For them, here is the research talking ancient roots of team sports.

Team sports have ancient roots

Competitive team games in which men test their mettle against others are universal across the world, and may have deep roots in our evolutionary past. Among hunter-gatherers, these games enable men to hone their physical skills and stamina, assess the commitment of their team members, and see how each performs under pressure. All these activities suggest motivation to practice skills involved in lethal raiding, says Michelle Scalise Sugiyama of the University of Oregon in the US, lead author of a study in Springer’s journal Human Nature.

Play behavior in humans and other animals is thought to have evolved as a way to develop, rehearse, and refine skills that are critical for survival or reproduction. Chase games, for instance, build stamina and speed, which is helpful for evading predators. Similarly, play fighting is believed to develop skills used in actual fighting. Although many animals play fight, only people do so in teams. The study’s findings suggest that team play fighting is not a recent invention of agricultural societies.

For the purposes of this study, Scalise Sugiyama and her colleagues researched how widespread indigenous forms of coalitional play fighting were among hunter-gatherer societies, and whether these games rehearse motor skills used in lethal raiding. This type of play involves the use of coordinated action and non-lethal physical force by two opposing teams, each of which attempts to attain a predetermined physical objective, such as scoring a goal, while preventing their opponents from doing the same.

Scalise Sugiyama and her colleagues analyzed the early ethnographic records of societies described as hunter-gatherers in Murdock’s Ethnographic Atlas. Although play (or its absence) was not commonly or extensively documented by early ethnographers, Scalise Sugiyama and her colleagues found information about hunter-gatherer team contact games for 46 of the 100 culture regions in the atlas that contain hunter-gatherer societies.

Activities using sticks to hit objects (and sometimes people) were the most common game type, followed by games involving kicking and games similar to rugby. The researchers also found many instances of activities involving running, grappling, parrying and throwing. These physical skills mirror those used by hunter-gatherers when raiding other groups. Scalise Sugiyama says that coalitional play fighting may have served as a practice ground for learning how to coordinate striking, blocking, kicking, dodging and projectile-throwing maneuvers amongst coalition members, all in an effort to increase the chances of success and reduce the chances of injury during potentially lethal raids.

“Interestingly, mock warfare was found in 39 per cent of culture clusters and boys’ mock warfare in 26 per cent. This suggests that motivation to engage in coalitional play fighting emerges in childhood,” says Scalise Sugiyama.

The safe confines of a game did not only have physical benefits but provided an opportunity to work as a team. Men learned to anticipate, monitor and strategically respond to the actions of their opponents, and continuously assess situations as both sides tired or lost combatants.

“Periodic participation in such games during childhood, adolescence, and early to middle adulthood provides individuals with opportunities to viscerally assess the aggressive formidability and commitment of their own and—when played with neighboring groups—other coalitions as their composition and skills change through time,” explains Scalise Sugiyama. “The widespread evidence for such games among hunter-gather societies suggests that the motivation to engage in them is a universal feature of human psychology, generating behavior that develops, rehearses, and refines the coalitional combat skills used in lethal raiding.”

The Creator, having in the beginning (of creation) created mankind together with sacrifice, said, “By this shall ye propagate; let this be the milch cow of your desires (the cow which yields all the desired objects).

I interpret this verse as: Mankind was created along with sacrifices or mankind was created by sacrifice. यज्ञ word has depth but for the simple understanding, in chapter 3 context, it means selfless work for others (fellow travelers on earth) wellbeing. Only way to fulfill all desires/wishes is to perform यज्ञ and let यज्ञ be our ista-kama-dhuk i.e. The way of living.

In next verse, Krishna prescribes:
देवान्भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः।
परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ।।3.11।।
With this (यज्ञ) you must gratify the devas and let the devas gratify you; thus gratifying one another, you shall attain the highest good.

I understand: यज्ञ or selfless living is the way to nourish Devas in our body. Who are Devas in our body? For me, they are primary elements (8 वसु), energy forces (11 रूद्र), and catalysts (12 आदित्य) as mentioned in Vedas and Brahman granths who made and maintained different organs and senses for me so far. Since all devas in our body perform selfless work for our existence, it is our duty to nourish them, take care of them without fail, of course for better living.

Why nourish Devas in the body?
The devas, gratified with necessary action will grant you the things sacrificed. Hence whosoever enjoys their gifts without offering them to these devas-he is surely a thief.
If you don’t take care of your body, you are THIEF.

So how many types of यज्ञ one must perform to nourish Devas?
If one is living life (or trying to live) as per वैदिक धर्म, following verse is well know about यज्ञ.
‘अध्यापनं ब्रह्म यज्ञः पित्र यज्ञस्तु तर्पणं |
होमोदैवो बलिर्भौतो न्रयज्ञो अतिथि पूजनं || – मनु स्मृति 3.70
There are many types of यज्ञ but one must perform at least पंच महायज्ञ as prescribed by मनु स्मृति and शतपथ ब्राह्मण Of यजुर्वेद.

What consists of पंच महायज्ञ?
Intellectual nourishment of self by reading and deciphering Nature/God with the help of Vedas
To nourish devas by the devas work for us
3) पितृयज्ञ – Selfless work to protect कुल/परंपरा since परंपरा are blueprints for living in certain environmental conditions based on geography of the land.
Selfless love and nourishment towards rest of the living world(animals, trees, plants, birds). Unlike those who consider COW as mother just because she is economically helpful.
5) मनुष्ययज्ञ – Selfless love and nourishment of fellow human beings. Nurture their humanity. Ignite their humanity by your selfless यज्ञ in which you give आहुति of their ignorance. Help others to realize their divine potential!

Here, our focus is sports so let us understand देवयज्ञ in details.

देवयज्ञ means selfless nourishment of देव within so that they can work with their full efficiency and देवत्व can reflect as culmination effect. If you don’t take care of देव(s) within, they will not work effectively and hence you remain in shoddy human state, full of despair, anger and pain, wasting precious life time.

To understand meaning of any Sanskrit word, it is necessary to understand context in which word is used and different synonyms to strengthen the meaning of the word.Let us see some references to understand meaning of word देव.

देव is derived form of दिवु धातु. So देव’s characteristics are tapped in meanings of दिवु dhatu.

As per Panini’s grammar, दिवु is क्रीडाविजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगतिषु
The one who consider life as a play is DEVA
The one who has winning attitude is DEVA
The one who is excelled in communication, conducts, commerce, customs, civility is DEVA
The one whose life is bright is DEVA
5) स्तुति – The one who can praise others(humans, animals, nature) genuinely is DEVA (Genuine praise is very vital part of positive psychology! Those who have studied HR subjects, must be knowing this)
The one who is constantly working for establishing delight in society/ecosystem
The one who is able to take pride of self and at the same time can sacrifice it.
The one who has dream/a lofty selfless goal to be meditated on for betterment of mankind
The one from whose life, spiritual splendor is constantly radiating.
10) गति – The one who is constantly changing, गमनशील.
So, क्रीडा is important aspect of vedic life. Life must feel like play and play must be played like यज्ञ, selflessly. To prepare our intellect for selfless living, rigorous physical क्रीडा under active team sport is very essential. Krishna was not fool who inspired Gokul youth to play Hockey on the banks of Yamuna. He created army to fight against mighty कंस, out of simple cowherds’ youth of Gokul, on playground, by playing Hockey – a simulation of sacrifice and war.

क्रीडा is code of life. Inevitable necessity.

What sport can fit best as क्रीडा?
– The one which instill विजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगति in player
– The one which nourishes Devas inside in totality (Elements, Energy and Catalysts who created our body and maintaining it since birth)
– The one which inspire selfless living
– The one which is efficient in terms of Time spent vs nourishment gained.
– The one which won’t promote one directional growth
– Most important, क्रीडा should best simulate DEVAs working in our body
i.e. as electrifying as signals propagates between two neurons, as energetic as digestive fire, as vigilant as retina

Hockey, Football, Kho-Kho, Swimming, Kabbadi, Basketball
Cricket

Daily क्रीडा/sports is must if you are thriving to live like Devas inside you. Cricket comes nowhere near to electrifying neurons, energetic liver and brightest retina. Hockey, Football, Kho-Kho, Swimming, Kabbadi, Basketball do.

क्रीडा is emulation of universe within. To realize it, one must perform क्रीडा daily. क्रीडा is one mandatory way of self-realization. Without it, one cannot attain self-realization.

And I fully subscribe to Swami Vivekananda’s below thought:

‘Be Strong, my young friends, that is my advice to you. You will be nearer to heaven though football than though the study of GITA. These are my bold words, but i have to say them, for i love you. In know where the shoe pinches. I have gained a little experience. You will understand the GITA better with your biceps, your muscles, a lieele strong.’

Swami Vivekananda was realized soul and he very well knew importance of क्रीडा in life thriving to live like देव with brightest possible देवत्व RADIATING CONSTANTLY.

– Mahabharat, Bhishm Parva, 9.5

Bharat is Devbhumi, loved by Devas;so does your body, in shape of Bharat, is loved by Devas.

Bharat shaped Human body or Human shaped Bharat – Both are land of Devas. If we claim our bharatiya identity, क्रीडा (=Football,Hockey,Kho-kho) should be integral part of our life. If not, we are not entitled for Bharatiya identity.

The human body is a rare gift of God. Good health is the source of happiness and success in life. Since the body and mind are closely related to each other, ill health causes mental worries and depression, not enabling to pursue a definite goal in life. Swami Vivekananda has rightly said that most of our miseries are cause by our physical weaknesses.

Daily time spent in क्रीडा is the only solution. Watching and gossiping stupid cricketers(any sort of vicarious gratification, epiphenomenon or illusion) and their records is utter waste of life.

Role of sports and exercise in child planning

ExervciseGeneration

There is popular song in gujarati. Its lyrics goes like this:
“દીકરો મારો લાડકવાયો દેવ નો દીધેલ છે..” (My son/daughter is blessing of Deva).

do we realize what the word देव/Deva mean here? What are the qualities of Deva?

The first character of Deva is क्रीडा . If we wish our next generation being blessed by Deva, playing sports and doing exercise is very critical before child planning! Then only it will justify the song lyrics! 🙂 Think about it! Share with teens and newly wedded couples planning for child!

We wish strong Bharat but we hardly work on it. Our present youth is trapped in web of delusion. For them, physical activity matters but as a passion. And it comes with all vices that consumes their body and mind. Many of them even stay away from any form of physical activities and are stuck in gadgets and entertainment obsession. This results into catastrophe, not only in their life but also in all upcoming generations.

May be, that is how decay of genes and strength happens in Kaliyuga.

If you wish your traits to be saved and pass on to next generation, play. Play and exercise for the sake of worship of your body. Not as passion or show-off or status-symbol. For the sake of selfless worship of body that matters not only for your existence but also for well-being of future generations!

Why bother about future generations!

Because they are the custodians of dharma! They are the ones who will protect dharma! And sustain life here and otherwise!

RNA-Dependent Intergenerational Inheritance of Enhanced Synaptic Plasticity after Environmental Enrichment

Highlights

  • Exercising male mice pass a cognitive benefit to their offspring

  • This phenomenon is mediated by altered expression of sperm RNA

  • Levels of miR212/132 in sperm play a key role in this intergenerational effect

Summary

Physical exercise in combination with cognitive training is known to enhance synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory and lower the risk for various complex diseases including Alzheimer’s disease. Here, we show that exposure of adult male mice to an environmental enrichment paradigm leads to enhancement of synaptic plasticity and cognition also in the next generation. We show that this effect is mediated through sperm RNA and especially miRs 212/132. In conclusion, our study reports intergenerational inheritance of an acquired cognitive benefit and points to specific miRs as candidates mechanistically involved in this type of transmission.

Does physical activity influence the health of future offspring?

Study finds an intergenerational benefit

Physical and mental exercise is not only beneficial for your own brain, but can also affect the learning ability of future offspring – at least in mice. This particular form of inheritance is mediated by certain RNA molecules that influence gene activity. These molecules accumulate in both the brain and germ cells following physical and mental activity. Prof. André Fischer and colleagues from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Goettingen and Munich and the University Medical Center Goettingen (UMG) report these findings in the journal Cell Reports.
