Indian Organized Sports Industry (Cricket, Kabbadi, WWF and wherever corporates have started investment) is working on Western model of sports entertainment.
While we call these leagues “sports,” they are in fact businesses. Their business is entertainment. The NFL, for one, has actually argued this fact before the Supreme Court as recently as 2010. Being “entertainment,” the leagues are legally entitled to do what is needed to entertain their audience, such as the creation and promotion of certain “storylines.” Despite arguments to the contrary, this makes the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL on par with Roller Derby and Professional Wrestling.
In India, Sachin argued with IT dept calling his Cricket career as entertainment 😉
Here is the interesting take for those who are interested to know more about scripted sports entertainment.
The Undeniable Truth as it Relates to Professional Sports
It is mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts and proven in modern experiments that Vata (Vayu) type individuals will have maximum propensity for chronic diseases.
In ideal condition where air, water, food and social conditions are in great shape, humans start last phase of life around age 60. This is the age when body start experiencing Vata disorder.
Natural predominance of Vata over other dosha happen after we crosses 60. (Age 0 to 14 : Kapha, 14 to 60 : Pitta).
Unfortunately, due to life style, Vata becomes predominance in young age. So we see many in early 30s with VP Prakriti i.e. Vata heavy and PItta as secondary.VP Prakriti individuals have greater degree of Vata dosha so the individuals are more reactive to any kind of stimuli and prone to develop chronic stress leading to different kind of psychosomatic disorders. The reason for this could be that Pitta is responsible for intelligence and Vata is responsible for initiation and enthusiasm.
So to save our youth from diabetes, blood pressure and further complications, it is mandatory to engage them in exercise. It is very well defined in Ayurvedic text books that in advanced stage Prameha, exercises like physical exercise, wrestling, sports, riding elephant, horse and chariot, travelling on foot and moving around and also feats of archery are to be practiced. And since high calorie diet with no exercise is routine for many, they are prone to madhuprameha (Advance stage of prameha).

Effect of walking (aerobic isotonic exercise) on physiological variants with special reference to Prameha (diabetes mellitus) as per Prakriti
Walking is an isotonic aerobic exercise and has been associated with reduced blood sugar level in diabetic patients and other physiological changes in observational studies. A study was conducted to determine the effect of isotonic aerobic exercise (walking) on blood sugar level and other important physiological parameters as per Prakriti. This study was carried out in Department of Kriya Sharira and Kayachikita, S. S. Hospital; Faculty of Ayurveda, IMS, BHU and some cases were enrolled from Kashi Mumukshu Bhawan, Assi, Varanasi. A total 83 (32 diabetic control and 51 diabetic exercise) diabetic cases were included with age ranging from 35 to 65 years during January 2009 to January 2011. Control cases enrolled in this study had not performed any exercise. The results of the study revealed that, there is a strong association in between Prakriti, Blood pressure and certain other Biochemical parameters.
The present work covered a study of 83 cases. Out of these 44 males, 39 females. In this research work, maximum number of cases 57 (68.67%) belonged to Vata – Piitaja (VP) Prakriti and minimum number of cases 8 (9.645%) belonged to Vata-Kaphaja Prakriti. Incidence of male patients was high. In nut shell, on the basis of the observations, it can be concluded that the systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure and respiratory rate are the specific responses that may have a strong association with the Prakriti of an individual at certain physiological conditions. Along with it, certain other biochemical parameters i.e., blood sugar level, lipid profile have shown strong association with Prakriti and walking in diabetic individuals. Vata–Piitaja (VP)Prakriti individuals have shown maximum response in the study. Certain other biochemical parameters i.e., blood sugar level, lipid profile have shown strong association with Prakriti and exercise. Walking is effective in maintenance of health, prevention of diseases like diabetes mellitus.
Cancer cell? What is it? There is nothing like cancer cell. Body cells are your Annamaya footprints. Your own identity. There is nothing called cancer cell. Cancer cells – they are nothing but your normal body cells behaving cancerously.
Cancer is a behavior. Uncontrolled behavior to rebel against the self. Rebel because you being Pati (Protector) of the Ayodhya (Body) is not performing duties well.
Cancer can be treated. Suppressing cancer symptoms is not cancer treatment. Revive cellular confidence. Be happy. Be cheerful. Be more social. Live in the lap of mother nature.
Cricket is a societal cancer. So even if you are a great person but still associated with Cricket, you are responsible for cancer. I don’t see such persons with high respect.
I am long distance runner and despite crossing 30, I still can beat teen athletes in 100 m sprints. Occasionally, I play football. In my teen age, I played cricket too.
My yardstick to evaluate Cricket as cancer is because of my understanding of word क्रीडा.
Cricket is light years far to fit in word ‘क्रीडा’ (Cricket being hopelessly laggard entertainment cannot fit in my understanding of क्रीडा ) but it is very close to word ‘कीड़ा’ (insects – mafias, corrupts, criminals chewing this Nation) of the society. As a leader, as a political party with difference, as a youngster, I would never ever embrace it.
And someone doing it, it is fate of the Nation, party and an individual. God bless.
सहयज्ञाः प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा पुरोवाच प्रजापतिः।
अनेन प्रसविष्यध्वमेष वोऽस्त्विष्टकामधुक्।।3.10।।
The Creator, having in the beginning (of creation) created mankind together with sacrifice, said, “By this shall ye propagate; let this be the milch cow of your desires (the cow which yields all the desired objects).
I interpret this verse as: Mankind was created along with sacrifices or mankind was created by sacrifice. यज्ञ word has depth but for the simple understanding, in chapter 3 context, it means selfless work for others (fellow travelers on earth) wellbeing. Only way to fulfill all desires/wishes is to perform यज्ञ and let यज्ञ be our ista-kama-dhuk i.e. The way of living.
In next verse, Krishna prescribes:
देवान्भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः।
परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ।।3.11।।
With this (यज्ञ) you must gratify the devas and let the devas gratify you; thus gratifying one another, you shall attain the highest good.
I understand: यज्ञ or selfless living is the way to nourish Devas in our body. Who are Devas in our body? For me, they are primary elements (8 वसु), energy forces (11 रूद्र), and catalysts (12 आदित्य) as mentioned in Vedas and Brahman granths who made and maintained different organs and senses for me so far. Since all devas in our body perform selfless work for our existence, it is our duty to nourish them, take care of them without fail, of course for better living.
Why nourish Devas in the body?
इष्टान्भोगान्हि वो देवा दास्यन्ते यज्ञभाविताः।
तैर्दत्तानप्रदायैभ्यो यो भुङक्ते स्तेन एव सः।।3.12।।
The devas, gratified with necessary action will grant you the things sacrificed. Hence whosoever enjoys their gifts without offering them to these devas-he is surely a thief.
If you don’t take care of your body, you are THIEF.
So how many types of यज्ञ one must perform to nourish Devas?
If one is living life (or trying to live) as per वैदिक धर्म, following verse is well know about यज्ञ.
‘अध्यापनं ब्रह्म यज्ञः पित्र यज्ञस्तु तर्पणं |
होमोदैवो बलिर्भौतो न्रयज्ञो अतिथि पूजनं || – मनु स्मृति 3.70
There are many types of यज्ञ but one must perform at least पंच महायज्ञ as prescribed by मनु स्मृति and शतपथ ब्राह्मण Of यजुर्वेद.
What consists of पंच महायज्ञ?
1) ब्रह्मयज्ञ – Intellectual nourishment of self by reading and deciphering Nature/God with the help of Vedas
2) देवयज्ञ – To nourish devas by the devas work for us
3) पितृयज्ञ – Selfless work to protect कुल/परंपरा since परंपरा are blueprints for living in certain environmental conditions based on geography of the land.
4) भूतयज्ञ – Selfless love and nourishment towards rest of the living world(animals, trees, plants, birds). Unlike those who consider COW as mother just because she is economically helpful.
5) मनुष्ययज्ञ – Selfless love and nourishment of fellow human beings. Nurture their humanity. Ignite their humanity by your selfless यज्ञ in which you give आहुति of their ignorance. Help others to realize their divine potential!
Here, our focus is sports so let us understand देवयज्ञ in details.
देवयज्ञ means selfless nourishment of देव within so that they can work with their full efficiency and देवत्व can reflect as culmination effect. If you don’t take care of देव(s) within, they will not work effectively and hence you remain in shoddy human state, full of despair, anger and pain, wasting precious life time.
To understand meaning of any Sanskrit word, it is necessary to understand context in which word is used and different synonyms to strengthen the meaning of the word.Let us see some references to understand meaning of word देव.
देव is derived form of दिवु धातु. So देव’s characteristics are tapped in meanings of दिवु dhatu.
As per Panini’s grammar, दिवु is क्रीडाविजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगतिषु
1) क्रीडा – The one who consider life as a play is DEVA
2) विजिगीषा – The one who has winning attitude is DEVA
3) व्यवहार – The one who is excelled in communication, conducts, commerce, customs, civility is DEVA
4) द्युति – The one whose life is bright is DEVA
5) स्तुति – The one who can praise others(humans, animals, nature) genuinely is DEVA (Genuine praise is very vital part of positive psychology! Those who have studied HR subjects, must be knowing this)
6) मोद – The one who is constantly working for establishing delight in society/ecosystem
7) मद – The one who is able to take pride of self and at the same time can sacrifice it.
8) स्वप्न – The one who has dream/a lofty selfless goal to be meditated on for betterment of mankind
9) कान्ति – The one from whose life, spiritual splendor is constantly radiating.
10) गति – The one who is constantly changing, गमनशील.
So, क्रीडा is important aspect of vedic life. Life must feel like play and play must be played like यज्ञ, selflessly. To prepare our intellect for selfless living, rigorous physical क्रीडा under active team sport is very essential. Krishna was not fool who inspired Gokul youth to play Hockey on the banks of Yamuna. He created army to fight against mighty कंस, out of simple cowherds’ youth of Gokul, on playground, by playing Hockey – a simulation of sacrifice and war.
क्रीडा is code of life. Inevitable necessity.
What sport can fit best as क्रीडा?
– The one which instill विजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगति in player
– The one which nourishes Devas inside in totality (Elements, Energy and Catalysts who created our body and maintaining it since birth)
– The one which inspire selfless living
– The one which is efficient in terms of Time spent vs nourishment gained.
– The one which won’t promote one directional growth
– Most important, क्रीडा should best simulate DEVAs working in our body
i.e. as electrifying as signals propagates between two neurons, as energetic as digestive fire, as vigilant as retina
Daily क्रीडा/sports is must if you are thriving to live like Devas inside you. Cricket comes nowhere near to electrifying neurons, energetic liver and brightest retina. Hockey, Football, Kho-Kho, Swimming, Kabbadi, Basketball do.
क्रीडा is emulation of universe within. To realize it, one must perform क्रीडा daily. क्रीडा is one mandatory way of self-realization. Without it, one cannot attain self-realization.
And I fully subscribe to Swami Vivekananda’s below thought:
‘Be Strong, my young friends, that is my advice to you. You will be nearer to heaven though football than though the study of GITA. These are my bold words, but i have to say them, for i love you. In know where the shoe pinches. I have gained a little experience. You will understand the GITA better with your biceps, your muscles, a lieele strong.’
Swami Vivekananda was realized soul and he very well knew importance of क्रीडा in life thriving to live like देव with brightest possible देवत्व RADIATING CONSTANTLY.
अत्र ते वणयिष्यामि वर्षं भारत ! भारतम् ।
प्रियमिन्द्रस्य देवस्य मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य च ॥५॥
– Mahabharat, Bhishm Parva, 9.5
Bharat is Devbhumi, loved by Devas;so does your body, in shape of Bharat, is loved by Devas.
Bharat shaped Human body or Human shaped Bharat – Both are land of Devas. If we claim our bharatiya identity, क्रीडा (=Football,Hockey,Kho-kho) should be integral part of our life. If not, we are not entitled for Bharatiya identity.
The human body is a rare gift of God. Good health is the source of happiness and success in life. Since the body and mind are closely related to each other, ill health causes mental worries and depression, not enabling to pursue a definite goal in life. Swami Vivekananda has rightly said that most of our miseries are cause by our physical weaknesses.
Daily time spent in क्रीडा is the only solution. Watching and gossiping stupid cricketers(any sort of vicarious gratification, epiphenomenon or illusion) and their records is utter waste of life.
When I talk about superiority of local culture of Bharat, many friends educated under Macaulay’s clerk producing education system, doubts and mock about it.
One point I advocate and rigorously follow in my life is: Doing exercise at ground, playing real sports at ground. In mud, in soil, on real turf.
There are infinite benefits of being on ground daily.
Let me discuss one invisible benefit here.
When you spend active time with mother Earth, the real medicinal turf, you expose your body to healthy bacteria in soil.
“Friendly” bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae commonly found in soil activates brain cells to produce the brain chemical serotonin. Serotonin, also known as 5-HT (short for 5-hydroxytryptamine), is found in the gut, brain, nerves and blood of humans and other animals. There are 14 different receptors that bind to serotonin each working a different property of this highly multi-functional chemical messenger.
Apart from having a range of pharmacological actions, serotonin constricts blood vessels, sends messages between cells in the brain and within the central nervous system, regulates secretion of digestive juices, and helps to control the passage of food through the gut.
Low levels of serotonin are linked with a number of disorders including aggression, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, irritable bowel and fibromyalgia.
So when you are on ground, you naturally de-stressed your mind. Soil and her bacteria helps you to calm down.
Can this be possible in Gym?
No. Gym is highly controlled environment. Not only devoid of soil and our friendly bacteria but any bacteria. On the other hand, Gym is full of different pathogens your fellow Gym-goers carry. Air conditioners cannot replace Air so fast that you always get healthy air. Place that can infect your body easily.
So, one more example of great glorious healthy Bharatiya life style.
Go to Akhada and/or ground! Send your kids to Akhada and/or ground. If you still go to Gym after reading this, God bless you! 😀
Soil Bacteria Work In Similar Way To Antidepressants
Researchers from Bristol University and University College London discovered using laboratory mice, that a “friendly” bacteria commonly found in soil activated brain cells to produce the brain chemical serotonin and altered the mice’s behaviour in a similar way to antidepressants.
They are suggesting this could explain why immune system imbalance could make some people vulnerable to mood disorders like depression.
Lead author, Dr Chris Lowry from Bristol University said, “These studies help us understand how the body communicates with the brain and why a healthy immune system is important for maintaining mental health“.
Peripheral immune activation can have profound physiological and behavioral effects including induction of fever and sickness behavior. One mechanism through which immune activation or immunomodulation may affect physiology and behavior is via actions on brainstem neuromodulatory systems, such as serotonergic systems. We have found that peripheral immune activation with antigens derived from the nonpathogenic, saprophytic bacterium, Mycobacterium vaccae, activated a specific subset of serotonergic neurons in the interfascicular part of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRI) of mice, as measured by quantification of c-Fos expression following intratracheal (12 h) or s.c. (6 h) administration of heat-killed, ultrasonically disrupted M. vaccae, or heat-killed, intact M. vaccae, respectively. These effects were apparent after immune activation by M. vaccae or its components but not by ovalbumin, which induces a qualitatively different immune response. The effects of immune activation were associated with increases in serotonin metabolism within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, consistent with an effect of immune activation on mesolimbocortical serotonergic systems. The effects of M. vaccae administration on serotonergic systems were temporally associated with reductions in immobility in the forced swim test, consistent with the hypothesis that the stimulation of mesolimbocortical serotonergic systems by peripheral immune activation alters stress-related emotional behavior. These findings suggest that the immune-responsive subpopulation of serotonergic neurons in the DRI is likely to play an important role in the neural mechanisms underlying regulation of the physiological and pathophysiological responses to both acute and chronic immune activation, including regulation of mood during health and disease states. Together with previous studies, these findings also raise the possibility that immune stimulation activates a functionally and anatomically distinct subset of serotonergic neurons, different from the subset of serotonergic neurons activated by anxiogenic stimuli or uncontrollable stressors. Consequently, selective activation of specific subsets of serotonergic neurons may have distinct behavioral outcomes.
