Right to elect-Right to Recall in Ramayana, true essence of Raam-rajya

There is a remarkable passage in Ramayana which shows that the popular voice was a powerful element in the selection of leader of the Nation at all levels.
In Ayodhya Kanda, when King Dasratha intended to ordain Raam as the Crown Prince, he called the chiefs of all Cities and Villages in his assembly.

नानानगरवास्तव्यान पृथग्जानपदान अपि
समानिनाय मेदिन्याः परधानान पृथिवीपतिः || 2.1.45

“Dasaratha called for other kings and officers staying in various cities and villages in his kingdom separately.”

What was common characteristic of those who were assembled?

All were ‘राजानो लोकसंमताः’ i.e. those who were duly liked by their people. [2.1.48]
What gazette was presented by Dasratha in assembly?

यदीदम् मेऽनुरूपार्धं मया साधु सुमन्त्रितम् |
भवन्तो मेऽनुमन्यन्तां कथं वा करवाण्यहम् || २-२-१५
यद्यप्येषा मम प्रीतिर्हितमन्यद्विचिन्त्यताम् |
अन्या मद्यस्थचिन्ता हि विमर्दाभ्यधिकोदया || २-२-१६

“I am telling this after lot of thinking. Give consent to me if you feel this to be good and befitting. How else shall I do it?”
“This is my desire. Yet, let there be thinking on any other beneficial way. Thinking by impartial neutral people will be distinctive and well developed through grinding of opposing views.”

Who were लोकसंमताः? And what did they reply in assembly?

तस्य धर्मार्थविदुषो भावमाज्ञाय सर्वशः |
ब्राह्मणा जनमुख्याश्च पौरजानपदैः सह || २-२-१९
समेत्य मन्त्रयित्वा तु समतागतबुद्धयः |
ऊचुश्च मनसा ज्ञात्वा वृद्धं दशरथं नृपम् || २-२-२०
अनेकवर्षसाहस्रो वृद्धस्त्त्वमसि पार्थिव |
स रामं युवराजानमभिषिञ्चस्व पार्थिवम् || २-२-२१

After understanding the opinion of King Dasaratha, who knew the holy and worldly matters, the Brahmans, important people, urban and rural citizens came to a consensus after discussing together and told the aged king as follows.

“Oh king! You are an elderly person with thousands of years of age. Hence, inaugurate Rama as the ruling prince.”

[Marut: Please note the age criteria. If King/Leader is old enough, he must resign from the post. Unlike our present breed of leaders.]

After listening this, Dasratha replied

कथं नु मयि धर्मेण पृथिवीमनुशासति |
भवन्तो द्रष्टुमिच्छन्ति युवराजं ममात्मजम् || २-२-२५

“Why do you desire to see my son as the prince, when I am ruling this earth with righteousness?”

People representatives replied:
गुणान् गुणवतो देव देवकल्पस्य धीमतः |
प्रियानानन्ददान् कृत्स्नान् प्रवक्ष्यामोऽद्यतान् शृणु || २-२-२७

“Oh king! We shall tell you now the various virtues of your wise son, listen to them. His qualities are equal to those of celestials. They are liked by all. They give happiness to all.”

And they explained reasons why Raam is best suited for King’s post.
Dasratha wants to remain as King but People desired Raam as King (This is because, at the age of 16, Raam was ordained to start his nationwide Tirth Yatra, and by that he met and lived with people of all states and became popular leader by his able-bodied characteristics as King)

In this example from our history, it is clear that King left the final decision of the question to the assembly, and even authorized it to suggest new measures, if his own proved little worth.

He also forewarned them not to decide based on sentiments associated with Dasratha’s family prestige but according to real welfare of the Kingdom.

Further in the epic, when Dasratha died, very same assembly suggested that someone from इक्ष्वाकू family line should become King (out of their sheer sentiments followed by tragic death). Cheif Preist, Vashistha replied, unaffected by emotions and sentiments:

“Since Bharat is selected by us, in absence of Raam, let him drive the Nation and not any one else from इक्ष्वाकू family line, just because Bharat is not here right now and we have good sentiments associated with Family.”

– Raam’s Nationwide work during this Tirth-Yatra.

Above historical (ऐतिहासिक) account furnishes a striking instance of the constitutional power exercised by People to select their future King.


Nation as Organism : Why Globalization is a Long Term Failure

I reiterate this example again and again for intuitive minds to envision Nation driving factors..

1) Imagine Rashtra as an organism. For example, Bharat is a human species (as her geographical shape resembles to human body). Each organism has her own way of working. Humans live life different than dogs or dolphins.

2) Imagine States as organs of organism. Each organ has specific way of working. A defined goal to serve the body.

3) Imagine individual cells as citizens. They too have defined goal to serve the body as per their skills and inclination.

So, American model cannot work for Bharat. Bharatiya model cannot work for China. Yes, we may learn from each other but absolute copy-paste won’t work. Dog cannot transform into human. Human cannot become dolphin.

So when we talk about Nation driving factors. We must empower individual and from this bottom up approach, Nation should be run. Between individual and Nation, each macro identity i.e. taluka, district, state – act as per local organic environment. Everyone with single goal – To serve the Nation.

Nation Building : Character and Ethics development is first step


चरित्र निर्माण is useless waste of time? lol. Chanakya will laugh on your fat ignorance.

As per Chanakya, चरित्र निर्माण is important first step to establish pro-people laws and orders. Some mis-guided young activists love Chanakya very well but have hard time to understand Chanakya’s this requirement.

Since they just study Chanakya for own intellectual satisfaction, without love for him, they selectively ignore this important step. They not only ignore it, they make fun of others who are working on this dream of Chanakya.

You need to understand this: Unless and until we have potent citizens understanding important of participatory democracy, it is impossible to gather mass support for laws in their favor. And to do that, we must first give extra efforts in चरित्र निर्माण i.e. True Education.


Chanakya: “Discipline (विनय & विवेक) is important to maintain law and order situation in society. Discipline could be of two kinds : artificial and natural; for, law-drafts can be understood by those who are ready and willing to be taught the necessary Discipline. To prepare subjects of the Nation disciplined, it is necessary to teach them science of Veda. The study of Veda can tame only those who are possessed of mental faculties like obedience, hearing, grasping, retentive memory, discrimination, inference, and deliberation, and cannot tame others who are devoid of these qualities. To imbibe these qualities, one must stay in company of aged experienced in Science, epitome of these qualities. In view of maintaining efficient laws, one must ever and invariably keep company with aged professors of sciences, in whom alone laws(Dharma) has firm root.”

– Arthashashtra, Book 1, Chapter 5

So as per Chanakya, चरित्र निर्माण is important first step to establish pro-people laws and orders.

Here is the formula:

Emergence (चरित्र निर्माण) of seer-scientists among us -> Children living in company of them -> Future citizens full of obedience, hearing, grasping, retentive memory, discrimination, inference, and deliberation qualities -> Citizens with विनय & विवेक for laws -> People-friendly government

Nation governed for the people, by the people




All of us seek Nation governed for the people, by the people (प्रजा-आधीन राजा,राष्ट्र-प्रेमी प्रजा).
Let us assume that we get such system, by hook or crook. System is in place. Do you think, it will go on forever? If yes, I think you are living in some lunatic plane.

Ethical conduct of citizens play vital role to nurture and preserve any ideal political system envisioned.

Ethical conduct needs to be induced in citizens. If this ethical conduct is induced out of fear of the law, it won’t last for long because of humans inherent tendency to protest again slavery.

For self-governed system to stay on for time immemorial, we also need to work hard to establish self-governed morality, rooted in love for Nation and understanding of swa-dharma. To establish self-governed morality, character-building of subjects remain unavoidable job. That is where parenting, educating, military-training will play important role.

My suggestion to all patriots is to work for strengthening of both legs together i.e. Desh and Deshi-bhakt. Let there be no gaffe in achieving this goal.

राष्ट्र भावना – अदृश्य प्रगाढ़ सूत्र


वयं राष्ट्रे जागृयाम पुरोहिता | यजु.

राष्ट्र को बुराइयों से बचाये रखने का उत्तरदायित्व पुरोहितों का है।
तमेव ऋषिं तमु ब्रह्माणमाहुर्यज्ञन्य सामगा | ऋग् १०/१०७/६

निरन्तर ज्ञान दान करते रहना ब्राह्मण की पवित्र जिम्मेदारी है।

Often, there is a myth propagated that this land never had राष्ट्र भावना.

Yes, राष्ट्र is not modern Nation-state. But it does display the inherent cultural common thread keeping Sanatani(s) together. Maratha, Rajput, Punjabi, Tamil – all together, for dharma.


राष्ट्र के पुरोहित=नायक में किन भावों का समावेश हो, यह संक्षेप से इन मन्त्रों में अंकित है | पुरोहित में सब प्रकार का बल होना चाहिए क्या ब्राह्मबल और क्या क्षात्रबल | वैदिक पुरोहित की गम्भीर घोषणा सचमुच सबके मनन करने योग्य है संशितं म इदं ब्रह्म = मेरा यह ब्राह्मबल सुतीक्ष्ण है; केवल ब्राह्मबल ही नहीं,प्रत्युत संशितं वीर्यं बलम् = वारक सामर्थ्य और रक्षण शक्ति भी तेज है | दूसरों से आक्रान्त होने पर दूसरों पर आक्रमण करके उनको भगा देने का नाम वीर्य्य और दूसरों से आक्रान्त होने पर अपनी रक्षा कर सकने को बल कहते हैं | क्षात्रबल के ये दो प्रधान अंग हैं | पूरी शान्ति वहीं होती है – यत्र ब्रह्मं च क्षत्रं च सम्यञ्चौ चरतः सह (य. 20|25) = जहाँ ब्राह्मबल और क्षात्रसामर्थ्य समान गतिवाले होकर एक साथ विचरते हैं | क्षत्रिय में केवल क्षात्रबल है किन्तु ब्राह्मण में ब्राह्मण तथा क्षात्रबल दोनों हैं | यही ब्राह्मण का उत्कर्ष है | क्षात्रबलविहीन ब्राह्मण सचमुच हीन है, वह पूर्ण ब्राह्मण नहीं है | जिस राष्ट्र का नेता वेदानुकूल होगा, सचमुच उसका क्षात्रतेज अजर=अक्षीण=अहीन ही रहेगा |

राष्त्र को संगठित रखना, तथा राष्ट्र के ओज वीर्य्य आदि की रक्षा करना पुरोहित का काम है –

समहमेषां राष्ट्रं स्यामि समोजो वीर्यं बलम् मैं इनके राष्ट्र को तथा ओज, बल, वीर्य्य को एक सूत्र में पिरो के रखता हूँ | नेता को चाहिए कि समूचे राष्ट्र के सामने एक महान उद्देष्य रखे | इससे राष्ट्र में एकता बनी रहती है | इस एकता के रहने से ही पुरोहित कह सकेगा एषां राष्ट्रं सुवीरं वर्धयामि (अ. 3|18|5) मैं इनके राष्ट्र को सुवीर बनाकर बढ़ाता हूँ |

जिस प्रकार के शिक्षक होंगे, वैसे ही शिष्य होंगे | यदि शिक्षक हीनवीर्य्य, हतोत्साह होंगे तो राष्ट्र में उत्साह-बलादि का अभाव रहेगा | वैदिक पुरोहित तो कहता है ‍

तीक्ष्णीयांसः परशोरग्नेस्तीक्ष्णतरा उत |
इन्द्रस्य वज्रात् तीक्ष्णीयांसो येषामस्मि पुरोहितः || अ.3|19|4

उनके हथियार कुठार से तीक्ष्णतर और आग से भी अधिक तीक्ष्ण हैं, इन्द्र के वज्र=बिजली से भी तेज हैं जिनका मैं पुरोहित हूँ | उग्र पुरोहित के शिष्य सभी प्रकार से उग्र होंगे, अतः राष्ट्र की उन्नति चाहने वालों को उग्र पुरोहित उत्पन्न करने चाहिए |

People say that concept of Nation in South Asia is pretty new, not older than 400 to 500 years. Before that it was area divided in small Kingdoms maintained by Kings and fighting with neighbors to expand their kingdom.

And countries like INDIA? It is just 60 years old country! They have long way to go before they are called developed Nation.

I certainly defer to this point after reading Shri Suktam’s shlok number 7. It is right that Modern concept of India as republic Nation came into existence for last 60 years but ONE NATION FOR ONE CULTURE is thousands of years old thought process in this culture. Of course, Shri Suktam is not the only evident which certify, that concept of one Nation is not new to my Countrymen. It is special thought sung since thousands of years. There are numerous such verses in Atharva Ved, which explains one Nation theory and benefits of it but due to our inability to decipher message written in Sanskrit, we accept what is taught to us by history written by colonial influenced historians.

In context of wealth, life and Economics, Sages when utter “Give me wealth because I am born on this great land” has significance in terms of progress provided by this land to her citizens. It explains connection between National Spirit and wealth management. I can be very sure for asking something when I have full faith. Here, Author has full faith in motherland and her strengths to make his life happy. It shows importance of National Spirit.

76 years ago, when United States of America was shaken by great economic depression, then president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt took his campaign for the presidency by putting this words in speech: “Faith in America, faith in our tradition of personal responsibility, faith in our institutions, and faith in ourselves demands that we all recognize the new terms of the old social contract.” And 75 years later, president elect , Barack Obama called for the same Faith! Faith in Nation, Faith in Values! Both the presidents in bad economic conditions, asked for re-appraisal of values. (USA is a strong nation in current time and I want to show that even Strong Nation in Bad condition calls for basic value system reforms)

Shri Suktam in this shlok suggests the same appraisal of values and faith in them. I am born on this great land which has all possibilities and I must gain wealth for pride of the nation. Since last 2000 to 5000 years, we have seen a dangerous erosion of the rules and principles that have allowed our market to work and our economy to thrive (And management like Satyam to fraud). Instead of thinking about what’s good for INDIA or what’s good for business, a mentality has crept into certain corners of New Delhi (or Mumbai or any corporate house) and the business world that says, “What’s good for me is good enough.” And there where Economy fails to sustain after certain level of growth. (American president Obama has already made this point in his speech many times.)

Remember one thing here, you are not the only living entity on this planet and one cannot survive without healthy environment – be it virus or human. Self-centered earnings at one point become poison and falls like a card castle.

Sadly, even after 60+ years of reestablished as a nation, we lack National Spirit. Not only in our day to day life but also in our greatest dream, there is no trace of National Spirit. And with such spirit, it is not only difficult but is impossible to become developed nation. You and I will die living for 50 years but our coming generation will surely curse us for demolition of value systems.


Devasakha is used for Kuber( Friend of God Shiva). Kuber is known for his unlimited wealth. So that means, Shri Suktam asks for making wealthy friends! No, not at all. By word ‘Devsakha’, author wants to become friend of God. Friendship is a relation between souls having common characteristics. You cannot be my true friend if we don’t have common purpose, common way of living and enjoying life so when author asks God’s friendship, he suggests acquiring God like characteristics so that eternal relation with God can establish. If you want to be friend of Kuber, earn like him, manage wealth like him and give like him.


National spirit drives the Economy and not individual-centric efforts.
Friendship is the relation having common purpose and selfless love. To become friend of the best in Society, I need to become the best.
One Nation – One Planet; No wars – No Conflict.

When we think of the Bharatiya Nationhood, it at once appears to be unique and distinctive in its essence and form from the concepts of other peoples on the globe. All other nations are more like flies on the wheel of Time or the cycle of ‘life and death’ but not Bharat.

All nations’ of the world have all been, very much like human beings subject to the law of birth, life and death. No nation is known so far to have escaped this law of nature except one and that is Bharat. In spite of ceaseless efforts to discover the secret, the birth and the beginning of Bharat have defied all the great research scholars. Cast a glance around and ask if there is in existence any nation elder or older than Bharat.


Bharat is the oldest nation born and yet alive on the surface of this globe. A large number of younger nations appeared on the horizon, shone for a while like meteors and disappeared for ever in the oblivion. The records of their civilisations are now the histories of short-lived nations.


  • Where is that Greece of the omniscient Aristotle, and his worthy disciple Plato who gave science and philosophy to Europe?
  • What happened to the Greek nation whose two proud heroes Philip and Alexander claimed to have conquered the world declaring impudently that they only were born to rule and the rest of humanity to serve them as slaves?
  • What is the fate of that Rome of Caesar which once infused self-confidence in Europe and conferred on it the famous laws?
  • Where are also those other Christian nations of old times which under the plea of saving the humanity and in the name of non-violence ran rivers of human blood on earth?


The truth is all those have been swept off; and now purely materialistic nations nurtured on the principles of Capitalism and Communism have arisen in places of the old ones, The Russia of Zar is no more. It has been metamorphosed into a completely new State. There is China our neighbour. She has lived almost as long as ourselves. But the China of old was Buddhist till yesterday. The spirit of the Buddhist China was a gift of Bharat. Having accepted Communism as her ideology, the Chinese Nation has undergone a total conversion. It will have to be admitted without any reservation that as much a new nation has sprung up in China as the old one has been buried.


It is on this account and in this sense we affirm that all the old nations of the world have disappeared from the surface of the earth. Only Bharat has survived defying death or change.


It may be asked what is the meaning of births and deaths, the rise and fall of nations? For in cases of all those nations which have disappeared and died, are not the lands, the seas, the people still existing?


Does not the humanity inhabiting those various> territories on earth inherit the blood of their forefathers? Why and how can it then be said that a nation is dead or that a new one is born? An individual has his individuality. A nation has its national spirit and character. It is called its ‘अस्मिता’, the essence or the spirit. It is the particular characteristics which distinguish one thing from the other and their consciousness that is called the ‘अस्मिता’ the soul of a thing. ‘अस्मिता’ is a quality of only a sentient being which has consciousness and knowledge. The nature of the soul and spirit of one nation which distinguishes it from other nations is then the ‘अस्मिता’, as the essence of its nationhood. There must be a common current running in every individual of the national society. It is in the existence, affirmation and manifestation of this ‘अस्मिता’, that a people rise to full nationhood.


It is only the community of people throbbing with the sense, sentiments and the spirit of oneness which deserves to be called a nation.  When such a community or the people living in a distinct piece of land abandons their distinguishing consciousness of the spirit of unity and oneness, ‘अस्मिता’, then indeed the nation is said to have committed its suicide. It soon dies and disappears.


After such a forsaking of the spirit, when the people adopt new forms and formulas of life then the  nation is said to have been converted or changed. It may be that such a transformation of a nation may lend it a newer spirit and splendor a while. Such a nation may accelerate its progress. But that does not refute the fact that the old is dead. When it is said that the European nations from the days of the Greek history to the Zardorn have died, our meaning is clear. It is in this sense that we claim Bharat which had to face many a death-struggles, has survived with its spirit and soul unchanged.


The soul and spirit of the Bharatiya people today are exactly what they have been through thousands of years past (However small in number, spirit is alive!). It is in the same unbroken spirit and thought that the people of Bharat are continuing their course of life. For instance, the regard and sentiments which the ‘Cow’ inspired in the people of Bharat in the days of Atharva Veda, and then in the days of Mahabharat, milleniums of years back, persist to this day in this middle of the 21st century. If the President is to be considered as the true representative of the people of a nation, then it is apparent that the President of Bharat, who carries in his heart the same high regard and reverence for the sacredness of the ‘Cow’, as, the Rishis of the old times or the kings and common people of the Mahabharat days, represents the sentiments of the people. It is an indication that the nation is unchanged.(If he has no reverence for Cow and promoting slaughter, throw him out of office!)


Rama and Krishna worshipped the river Ganga. That very sentiment persists in the Hindu society of the present times. In other nations the relics of history become show pieces in their museums. But in India today, the whole society carries in its thoughts and actions all those sentiments and feelings with which the ancient forefathers were inspired thousands of years back. There is nothing like a relic or a forsaken idea in India. Even narrow minds and parochial personalities who get themselves encased in their territorial  or provincial prides and prejudices have unreservedly admitted that the spirit of Bharatiya nationhood has persisted since the prehistoric ages right up to the present times in an unchanged unbroken form and current. This persistence of the essence of Bharatiya nationhood which is a miracle according to some is a patent fact. It is for this reason that we consider our past to be worthy of becoming a sure and unshakable foundation for the future. It is the firm conviction of our gifted prophets that the Providence has bequeathed this national heritage to the people of Bharat for the saving of humanity.


Imbued with this belief an individual born in this land identifies himself with every particle on the surface of the earth. It is this spiritual identification with the Universe, a psychic consciousness of oneness that is the essence of our nationhood. The spirit which the word ‘Arya’ inspired the Aryas of the Vedic age to carry the message, and the mission of ‘Aryanising the humanity’ (civilising the universe), also continues to enthuse our great thinkers and heroes of today.

अस्मिता is profound Sanskrit word which cannot be translated to any other language. When word ‘अस्मिता’ is led by word ‘राष्ट्रिय’, it becomes sparkling source of living energy. It is a common current running in every individual of Nation society. It conveys that society has faith in land, pride for their legacy and confidence to progress ahead with very same cultural base. It is proof of immortal  Nation ‘भारत’.


If you don’t have ‘राष्ट्रीय अस्मिता’, you probably cannot connect yourself with I-ness of Nation. You fail to associate your identity with National identity. Bunch of individuals, without ‘राष्ट्रीय अस्मिता’, is not Nation.


Nurture राष्ट्रीय अस्मिता, in you, in your family, in your society, in your friends, in your colleague. Demonstrate. Exhibit your own example.


To Nurture राष्ट्रीय अस्मिता, study and put Vedic Culture in action, in your life. Demonstrate!


May Bharat live forever. May we thrive hard to expect & emerge return of super-heroes. May we live like micro-version of these super-heroes who kept भारतीय अस्मिता alive since time immemorial.
