Not all addictions are chemical. But surely, it is all about mental. Any pattern of behavior that leads to a pleasure, will be repeated by human minds. Positive reinforcement. This is technical addiction. Opium and TV act same as addictive agent.

When you watch TV or any passive entertainment medium, brain activity switches from the left brain to the right hemisphere. In fact, as per research, right brain is twice as active as the left. I call this a neurological anomaly.

The crossover of thoughts from left to right brain, releases endorphins, a neurochemical occurring naturally in the brain and having analgesic properties. i.e. Capable of relieving pain.

So every time you watch Television, or kids watch it, or play video game or surf internet videos, flood of endorphins releases from the neural gates. Endorphins are same chemical that drug addicts consume for artificial pleasure.

All activities that releases endorphins are habit-forming i.e. prone for addiction.

This the reason why Opium addict and TV addict or Smoking addict or alcohol cannot break the habit easily.

So if you really want to develop addiction, daru, cigar or TV are not good habits. They accelerates your right brain chaos and left methodical brain becomes useless. This leads to vicious cycle of lethargy, procrastination, withdrawal symptoms.

Find out activity that uses both right and left brain. There should be balance of chemical communication between two parts of the brain. TV fails this criteria. Cinema too. Video games too. Epic failures.
So what to do?

Play. Go, play with children. Sports. Go play with friends. Any outdoor sport that demands rules following, methods to execute, timely decision, input processing and gut feeling (Both left and right brain usage), 30 minutes a day, is worth. Try it. My fav is kho-kho. Perfect game where one can use both left and right brain together.

And make sure while you are running, cycling, swimming or doing any physical activity in silo, you do not succumb to pleasure. Addiction of anything is not worth. Even if it is physical exercise. 🙂 I know they are better than watching TV which shutdowns all other areas of the brain but still…addiction is addiction 🙂 misuse of brain 😉 (Y)

Mind is an outcome localization. Local culture, local habits, local food, local air, local water, local societal interactions.

Yes, even after so called globalization, things remain local as long as mind and its disorders are concerned.

Then, why do we have one global stick to interpret and treat it?

I will go one step further – why not to have holistic dharma-based treatment for mind (which humbly considers all localizations)? After all, it is all mental! 🙂

PS: Dharma is not religion or sect! So don’t read/ignore this with biased mind! 😉

Most of the psychiatry practice in India is guided by the western concepts of mental health and illness, which have largely ignored the role of religion, family, eastern philosophy, and medicine in understanding and managing the psychiatric disorders. India comprises of diverse cultures, languages, ethnicities, and religious affiliations. However, besides these diversities, there are certain commonalities, which include Hinduism as a religion which is spread across the country, the traditional family system, ancient Indian system of medicine and emphasis on use of traditional methods like Yoga and Meditation for controlling mind.

There is evidence that gut bacteria can protect or predispose us to pathologies ranging from inflammation to diabetes and obesity. And, as far-fetching as it sounds, a remarkable amount data shows that they can even modify our mood and behaviour.

What is the connection between the microbiota, the brain, and mood?

There is a growing evidence of a microbial gut-brain axis in which bacteria can influence the brain, and vice versa.

Researchers from Canada found that mice from a particularly shy species became more active and curious after receiving a gut microbial transplant from less inhibited mice. We know that some strains of intestinal bacteria produce compounds that have an effect on the nervous system: neurotransmitters, for example, or metabolites that alter the blood-brain barrier (a barrier which filters the molecules passing from the body to the brain circulation – ed. note). We don’t yet know the precise mechanisms, but it’s quite clear that the gut microbes can influence mood and the behavioural patterns.

There are three types of space—the psychological space, the physical space and the infinite space of consciousness. [3.17]

The infinite space of individed consciousness is that which exists in all, inside and outside… The finite space of divided consciousness is that which created divisions of time, which pervades all beings… The physical space is that in which the elements exist. The latter two are not independent of the first. [3.97]

Everyone has two bodies, the one physical and the other mental. The physical body is insentient and seeks its own destruction; the mind is finite but orderly. [4.10]

I have carefully investigated, I have observed everything from the tips of my toes to the top of my head, and I have not found anything of which I could say, ‘This I am.’ Who is ‘I’? I am the all-pervading consciousness which is itself not an object of knowledge or knowing and is free from self-hood. I am that which is indivisible, which has no name, which does not undergo change, which is beyond all concepts of unity and diversity, which is beyond measure. [5.52]

Mind

The same infinite self conceives within itself the duality of oneself and the other. [3.1]

Thought is mind, there is no distinction between the two. [3.4]

The body can neither enjoy nor suffer. It is the mind alone that experiences. [3.115]

The mind has no body, no support and no form; yet by this mind is everything consumed in this world. This is indeed a great mystery. He who says that he is destroyed by the mind which has no substantiality at all, says in effect that his head was smashed by the lotus petal… The hero who is able to destroy a real enemy standing in front of him is himself destroyed by this mind which is [non-material].

The intelligence which is other than self-knowledge is what constitutes the mind. [5.14]

Millions of universes appear in the infinite consciousness like specks of dust in a beam of light. In one small atom all the three worlds appear to be, with all their components like space, time, action, substance, day and night. [4.2]

Yoga-Vasistha (YV) is not written as a systematic text. Its narrative jumps between various levels: psychological, biological, and physical. But since the Indian tradition of knowledge is based on analogies that are recursive and connect various domains, one can be certain that our literal reading of the passages is valid.

When त्रिदोष (कफ़्,पित्त,वायु) disturbance happen, one or another symptom surfaces in physical plane.

To come out of this situation, two actions are required. 1) Correction of त्रिदोष imbalance by habits change, food vrata, place change, medicines etc. 2) Elimination of toxins accumulated due to त्रिदोष imbalance.

For both actions, positive mindset is very essential. Your mental plane must act and visualize slow but steady recovery. And the root purpose behind it should be your intense but pious intention to perform Karma based on dharma. No selfish motive.

Many herbs work for balancing त्रिदोष and eliminating toxins but there is only one medicine which works for both, not only on physical plane but also on mental plane. That medicine is गव्य प्रसाद (गोबर,मूत्र,दूध). They start working from mental plane, stabilizing त्रिदोष on प्राणमय शरीर & अन्नमय शरीर.

दूध and its forms (छास,घी) are potent प्राणवाहक. Form of प्राण which when you intake with your full mental focus, will help stabilizing balance of त्रिदोष.
गोबर & मूत्र are potent अपानवाहक.Form of प्राण which when you intake with your full mental focus, will accelerates अपानवायु responsible for toxins elimination.

Even this recent paper suggest that Mindset matters [1]. So Gau mutra and Gobar are not just physical medicines but their name, their nature and action associated with name triggers potent अपानवायु in प्राणमय शरीर which helps अन्नमय शरीर in toxin cleaning.Bos Indicus or Desi Gay mata is सत्व personified so her प्रसाद is most potent to sustain any living organisms, be it plant or human.

Exercise and the Placebo Effect

In a study testing whether the relationship between exercise and health is moderated by one’s mindset, 84 female room attendants working in seven different hotels were measured on physiological health variables affected by exercise. Those in the informed condition were told that the work they do (cleaning hotel rooms) is good exercise and satisfies the Surgeon General’s recommendations for an active lifestyle. Examples of how their work was exercise were provided. Subjects in the control group were not given this information. Although actual behavior did not change, 4 weeks after the intervention, the informed group perceived themselves to be getting significantly more exercise than before. As a result, compared with the control group, they showed a decrease in weight, blood pressure, body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, and body mass index. These results support the hypothesis that exercise affects health in part or in whole via the placebo effect.

In simpler terms, omega-3 deficiency makes it harder for the smoker’s body to deal with its craving for another cigarette. “Earlier studies have proven that an imbalance in omega-3 is also related to mental health, depression and the ability to cope with pressure and stress. Pressure and stress, in turn, are associated with the urge to smoke. It is also known that stress and tension levels rise among people who quit smoking. Despite all this, the connection between all these factors had not been studied until now,” Dr. Rabinovitz Shenkar said.

Our medical science (Ayurveda) approves existence of mind as separate layer of organism. You have mind, I have mind, ameba too has mind. Your so much appearing dead furniture too has mind.

This mind decides circuitry of brain. When your mind changes, your brain changes, too. When neurons fire together, they wire together—mental activity actually creates new neural structures (Hebb 1949; LeDoux 2003)

As a result, even fleeting thoughts and feelings can leave lasting marks on your brain, much like a spring shower can leave little trails on a hillside.

So, it is important maintain healthy mental state. That is where we Indians can lead the world in upcoming turmoil times. We have rich heritage of mind experiments. Treasure for anyone whose mind is not confined in prejudices against own local culture.

Key of healthy body is : Healthy mind. What flows through your mind sculpts your brain. Thus, you can use your mind to change your brain for the better—which will benefit your whole being, and every other person whose life you touch.

Access to Nature May Be Vital For Mental Health, Study Finds

Just 90 minutes were shown to alter neural activity.

With more and more of us living in urban areas, researchers from Stanford University in the US wanted to investigate why urbanisation is associated with greater incidences of mental illness. In a controlled experiment, they looked at whether exposure to nature could influence depression levels and specifically ‘rumination’: repetitive thoughts focused on negative aspects of the self.

The researchers took two groups of participants and led them on 90-minute walks through two very different kinds of environments. One group walked across a grassland area populated with oak trees and shrubs, while the other group walked along the side of a heavily trafficked four-lane highway.

By performing brain scans on the walkers before and after the expedition, the team found that neural activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex – the area of the brain that’s active during rumination – had decreased in the volunteers who explored the natural environment. Their experience was consistent with this finding, with the group reporting that they found themselves ruminating less during the walk.

Those who trekked along the side of the road, on the other hand, demonstrated no changes in their neural activity, or in their self-reporting on rumination, suggesting that nature experiences can have a discernable, positive impact on our brains’ emotional regulation.

“These results suggest that accessible natural areas may be vital for mental health in our rapidly urbanising world,” said Gretchen Daily, a co-author of the study, in a release. “Our findings can help inform the growing movement worldwide to make cities more liveable, and to make nature more accessible to all who live in them.”

Culture of Violent Web-Series and Making of Zombies

I wrote this post 5 years back but I think it was ahead of time. Many friends called be fanatic for it.

There is new trend. What you can’t produce as multiplex movies due to censor board, produce them as web-series. There is no censor but you get maximum views. Even teens and kids will watch it as there is hardly any parental control in tech-illiterate society with no moral duties.

Trend of showing psychopath (a person with an antisocial personality disorder) led gross violence is increasing in retarded Bollywood (Gangs of wasseypur type).

Now the point is: As per study, there is a link between less functioning brain/mind of young adult whose brain development is still going on (age under 25) and interest in such psycho violence. (Link in first comment on post)

There are two possible conclusions.

1) Either violence disturbs brain development -> confused youth
2) Or due to pathetic food intake (Fast food) and lack of parenting, youth take interest in such retarded psycho movies and that further lead to slow down of brain development.

In either case, it is loss-loss situation. It only increases confused and psychos in society. And are we surprised about crimes against women? We shouldn’t be.

Solution?

1) Make sure your teen boy and girl eat right food. At least you should control it.
2) If possible, explain them side effects of remaining in influence of retarded or psycho perceptions.

Exposure to TV Violence Related to Irregular Attention and Brain Structure

“We found that the more violent TV viewing a participant reported, the worse they performed on tasks of attention and cognitive control,” Dr. Hummer said. “On the other hand, the overall amount of TV watched was not related to performance on any executive function tests.”

Dr. Hummer noted that these executive functioning abilities can be important for controlling impulsive behaviors, including aggression. “The worry is that more impulsivity does not mix well with the behaviors modeled in violent programming.”

Tests that measured working memory, another subtype of executive functioning, were not found to be related to overall or violent TV viewing.

Comparing TV habits to brain images also produced results that Dr. Hummer and colleagues believe are significant.

“When we looked at the brain scans of young men with higher violent television exposure, there was less volume of white matter connecting the frontal and parietal lobes, which can be a sign of less maturity in brain development,” he said.

White matter is tissue in the brain that insulates nerve fibers connecting different brain regions, making functioning more efficient. In typical development, the amount or volume of white matter increases as the brain makes more connections until about age 30, improving communication between regions of the brain. Connections between the frontal and parietal lobes are thought to be especially important for executive functioning.

“The take-home message from this study is the finding of a relationship between how much violent television we watch and important aspects of brain functioning like controlled attention and inhibition,” Dr. Hummer said.

Moon represents universal mind (and Sun universal eye). As soon as the child is born from the womb, it is the moon that makes the child breathe as per moon’s position in janma-nakshtra. As long as we are alive, it is moon governed chandra nadi that keeps the life’s time cycle in motion in Muladhara chakra.

Just as the moon keeps the time-cycle of our universe in motion, it is the moon that keeps time-cycle of the human body in motion.
