We watch TV while child is sleeping in another room. We continue with our activities even when child is crying and seeking our attention. We are on whatsapp when child’s eyes seek our attention for their activities. All these sums up as neglect. Neglect means impaired brain development

Digital devices during family time could exacerbate bad behavior

Parents who spend a lot of time on their phones or watching television during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime could influence their long-term relationships with their children. This is according to Brandon T. McDaniel of Illinois State University and Jenny S. Radesky of the University of Michigan Medical School, both in the US, who say so called “technoference” can lead children to show more frustration, hyperactivity, whining, sulking or tantrums. The study in the journal Pediatric Research, which is published by Springer Nature, examines the role and impact digital devices play in parenting and child behavior.

Technoference* is defined as everyday interruptions in face-to-face interactions because of technology devices. Recent studies estimate that parents use television, computers, tablets and smartphones for nine hours per day on average. A third of this time is spent on smartphones, which due to their portability are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime – all important times involved in shaping a child’s social-emotional wellbeing. When parents are on their devices research shows that they have fewer conversations with their children and are more hostile when their offspring try to get their attention.

In this study, 172 two-parent families (total of 337 parents) with a child age 5 years or younger answered online questionnaires as part of a research project about parenting and family relationships conducted between 2014 and 2016. Participants indicated how often per day different devices interrupted their conversations or activities with their children. Parents rated their child’s internalizing behavior such as how often they sulked or how easily their feelings were hurt, as well as their externalizing behavior, such as how angry or easily frustrated they were. The parents also reported on their own levels of stress and depression, the coparenting support they received from their partners, and their child’s screen media use.

In almost all cases, one device or more intruded in parent-child interactions at some stage during the day. Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to cope with difficult child behavior. However, the survey results showed that this tactic had its drawbacks. Electronic device use likely deprives parents of the opportunity to provide meaningful emotional support and positive feedback to their children which causes their offspring to revert to even more problematic behaviour such as throwing tantrums or sulking. This only added to parents’ stress levels, likely leading to more withdrawal with technology, and the cycle continues.

“These results support the idea that relationships between parent technoference and child externalizing behavior are transactional and influence each other over time,” says McDaniel. “In other words, parents who have children with more externalizing problems become more stressed, which may lead to their greater withdrawal with technology, which in turn may contribute to more child externalizing problems.”

Your IQ, your risk of heart disease, and other health problems are influenced by how well your grandmother ate during the third trimester of her pregnancy with your mother. The effects of the prenatal environment can even be multigenerational. If you want data, study generations grown after The Dutch famine of 1944, Bengal famine 1940s.

Basically, there is strong legacy link between atmosphere (and so available food, water) at the time of spring (time of progeny planning) of grandparent generation.

So if you are pregnant this year (or next year) in India, where drought is predicted, you must take care of your food intake. It is not only critical for your placenta supply line economics but for health all upcoming generations.

In ancient India, predicting drought was possible so State/Nation/Kingdom used to store grains for at least 12 years. Grains grown during famine year and year after famine, was not considered as food due to low nutrient value. Instead grains from State storage was utilized.

Present generation is suffering from chronic diseases. Roots were sown when their grandparents were eating first lot of Green revolution in India. Advent of chemical farming is showing results now.

I know, our dumb govt under the influence of their western masters, won’t think in this direction. Better take individual actions. If you can get old grains, use it for pregnant mothers in family. Save future of India.

Preparation for Upanayan (उपनयन संस्कार) : Introduction to Rishi24 (ऋषि-२४)

Last year when I visited local Ayyappa Temple with my son, we had vivid experience about how still some people still holding the dharma bastion in this chaotic times.

What an enchanting experience! I must say, down south, we have preserved the ritual sacredness much better than rest of Bharat in general. I could show little Kerala outside Kerala to my son

My son, listening to Ganesh Gayatri and Durga Gayatri, asked pertinent question. To answer him, I had to do home work.

His question: “Why are they chanting different version of ‘Prachodayat mantra(s) i.e. Gayatri mantras? Why do we chant Gayatri for different God? (આ જુદા જુદા પ્રચોદયાત મંત્ર કેમ બોલે છે? એવું કેમ? પ્રચોદયાત મંત્ર કેમ બોલવાનો?)”

So entire year, so far, I spent time researching on Maa Gayatri. My friends doing research on same also helped. Exactly after a year, we unveiled another layer of detail about Gayatri mantra and Gayatri chanda.

We visited Gayatri Shakti Peetha in our city. Little unknown and unexplored Sadhana Sthala in city. A place where 24 Rishis who had vision of individual syllable are established.

What I realized is that, this is how Maa Gayatri needs to be introduced to kids and prepare them for Upanayan. Unless and until they realize various tenets of life principles, they won’t realize the value of Gayatri mantra दीक्षा.

And we fail in this introduction, we compromise with kid’s potential. Don’t wait till Upanayan. Build enough stage and foundation for Upanayana.

गायत्री मंत्र में 24 अक्षर हैं। इन्हें मिलाकर पढ़ने से ही इनका शब्दार्थ और भावार्थ समझ में आता है। पर शक्ति-साधना के सन्दर्भ में इनमें से प्रत्येक अक्षर का अपना स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व और महत्व है। इन अक्षरों को परस्पर मिला देने से परम तेजस्वी सविता देवता से सद्बुद्धि को प्रेरित करने के लिए प्रार्थना की गई है और साधक को प्रेरणा दी गई है कि वह जीवन की सर्वोपरि सम्पदा ‘सद्बुद्धि’ का—ऋतम्भरा प्रज्ञा का महत्व समझें और अपने अन्तराल में दूर दर्शिता का अधिकाधिक समावेश करें। यह प्रसंग अति महत्वपूर्ण होते हुए भी रहस्यमय तथ्य यह है कि इस महामन्त्र का प्रत्येक अक्षर शिक्षकों और सिद्धियों से भरा पूरा है।

शिक्षा की दृष्टि से गायत्री मन्त्र के प्रत्येक अक्षर में प्रमुख सद्गुणों का उल्लेख किया गया है और बताया गया है कि उनको आत्मसात करने पर मनुष्य देवोपम विशेषताओं से भर जाता है। अपना कल्याण करता है और अन्य असंख्यों को अपनी नाव पर बिठाकर पार लगाता है। हाड़-मांस से बनी और मल-मूत्र से बनी काया में जो कुछ विशिष्टता दिखाई पड़ती है वह उससे समाहित सत्प्रवृत्तियों के ही हैं। जिसके गुण-कर्म स्वभाव में जितनी उत्कृष्टता है वह उसी अनुपात से महत्वपूर्ण बनता है और महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धियां प्राप्त करके जीवन सौभाग्य को हर दृष्टि से सार्थक बनाता है।

इन सद्गुणों की उपलब्धि को लोक शिक्षण सम्पर्क एवं वातावरण के प्रभाव में से भी बहुत कुछ प्रगति हो सकती है। किन्तु अध्यात्म-विज्ञान के अनुसार साधना उपक्रम द्वारा भी इन विभूतियों में से जिसकी कमी दिखती है, जिसके सम्वर्धन की आवश्यकता अनुभव होती है उसके लिए उपासनात्मक उपचार किये जा सकते हैं।

जिस प्रकार शरीर में कोई रासायनिक पदार्थ कम पड़ जाने से स्वास्थ्य लड़खड़ाने लगता है, उसी प्रकार उपरोक्त 24 सद्गुणों में से किसी में न्यूनता रहने पर उसी अनुपात से व्यक्तित्व त्रुटिपूर्ण रह जाता है। उस अभाव के कारण प्रगति-पथ पर बढ़ने में अवरोध खड़ा होता है। फलतः पिछड़ापन लदा रहने से उन उपलब्धियों का लाभ नहीं मिल पाता जिनके लिए मनुष्य-जीवन सुरदुर्लभ अवसर हस्तगत हुआ है। आहार के द्वारा एवं औषधि, उपचार से शरीर की रासायनिक आवश्यकता पूरी हो जाती है तो फिर स्वस्थता का आनन्द मिलने लगता है। इसी प्रकार गायत्री उपासना के विशिष्ट उपचारों से सत्प्रवृत्तियों की कमी पूरी की जा सकती है। उस अभाव को पूरा करने पर स्वभावतः प्रखरता एवं प्रतिभा बढ़ती है। उसके सहारे मनुष्य अधिक पुरुषार्थ करता है—अधिक दूर दर्शिता का परिचय देता है, शारीरिक तत्परता और मानसिक तन्मयता बढ़ने से अभीष्ट प्रयोजन पूरा करने में सरलता रहने और सफलता मिलने लगती है। सत्प्रवृत्तियों की इसी परिणित को सिद्धियां कहते हैं।

गायत्री के 24 अक्षर :—

समग्र गायत्री को सर्व विघ्न विनासिनी—सर्व सिद्धि प्रदायनी कहा गया है। संकटों का सम्वरण और सौभाग्य संवर्धन के लिए उसका आश्रय लेना सदा सुखद परिणाम ही उत्पन्न करता है। तो भी विशेष प्रयोजनों के लिए उसके 24 अक्षरों में प्रथक प्रथक प्रकार की विशेषताएं भरी हैं। किसी विशेष प्रयोजन की सामयिक आवश्यकता पूरी करने के लिए उसकी विशेष शक्ति धारा का भी आश्रय लिया जा सकता है। चौबीस अक्षरों की अपने विशेषताएं और प्रतिक्रियाएं हैं—जिन्हें सिद्धियां भी कहा जा सकता है—इस प्रकार बताई गई हैं—

गायत्री के समग्र विनियोग में सविता देवता, विश्वामित्र ऋषि एवं गायत्री छन्द का उल्लेख किया गया है, परन्तु उसके वर्गीकरण में प्रत्येक अक्षर एक स्वतंत्र शक्ति बन जाता है ।। हर अक्षर अपने आप में एक मंत्र है ।। ऐसी दशा में २४ देवता, २४ ऋषि एवं २४ छन्दों का उल्लेख होना भी आवश्यक है ।। तत्त्वदर्शियों ने वैसा किया भी है ।। गायत्री विज्ञान की गहराई में उतरने पर इन विभेदों का स्पष्टीकरण होता है ।। नारंगी ऊपर से एक दीखती है, पर छिलका उतारने पर उसके खण्ड घटक स्वतंत्र इकाइयों के रूप में भी दृष्टिगोचर होते हैं ।। गायत्री को नारंगी की उपमा दी जाय तो उसके अन्तराल में चौबीस अक्षरों के रूप में २४ खण्ड घटकों के दर्शन होते हैं ।। जो विनियोग एक समय गायत्री मंत्र का होता है, वैसा ही प्रत्येक अक्षर का भी आवश्यक होता है ।। चौबीस अक्षरों के लिए चौबीस विनियोग बनने पर उनके २४ देवता २४ ऋषि एवं २४ छन्द भी बन जाते हैं ।।

ऋषियों और देवताओं का परस्पर समन्वय है ।। ऋषियों की साधना से विष्णु की तरह सुप्तावस्था में पड़ी रहने वाली देवसत्ता को जाग्रत होने का अवसर मिलता है ।। देवताओं के अनुग्रह से ऋषियों को उच्चस्तरीय वरदान मिलते हैं ।। वे सामर्थ्यवान बनते हैं और स्व पर कल्याण की महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका प्रस्तुत करते हैं ।।

ऋषि सद्गुण हैं और देवता उनके प्रतिफल ।। ऋषि को जड़ और देवता को वृक्ष कहा जा सकता है ।। ऋषित्व और देवत्व के संयुक्त का परिणाम फल- सम्पदा के रूप में सामने आता है ।। ऋषि लाखों हुए हैं और देवता तो करोड़ों तक बताये जाते हैं ।। ऋषि पृथ्वी पर और देवता स्वर्ग में रहने वाले माने जाते हैं ।। स्थूल दृष्टि से दोनों के बीच ऐसा कोई तारतम्य नहीं है, जिससे उनकी संख्या समान ही रहे ।। उस असमंजस का निराकरण गायत्री के २४ अक्षरों से सम्बद्ध ऋषि एवं देवताओं से होता है ।। हर सद्गुण का विशिष्ट परिणाम होना समझ में आने योग्य बात है ।। यों प्रत्येक सद्गुण परिस्थिति के अनुसार अनेकानेक सत्परिणाम प्रस्तुत कर सकता है, फिर भी यह मान कर ही चलना होगा कि प्रत्येक सत्प्रवृत्ति की अपनी विशिष्ट स्थिति होती है और उसी के अनुरूप अतिरिक्त प्रतिक्रिया भी होती है ।। ऋषि रूपी पुरुषार्थ से देवता रूपी वरदान संयुक्त रूप से जुड़े रहने की बात हर दृष्टि से समझी जाने योग्य है ।।
मूर्धन्य ऋषियों की गणना २४ है ।। इसका उल्लेख गायत्री तंत्र में इस प्रकार मिलता है-

वामदेवोऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठः शुक्रः कण्वः पराशरः ।।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजाः कपिलः शौनको महान्॥ १३॥
याज्ञवल्क्या भरद्वाजो जमदग्निस्तपोनिधिः ।।

ZERO Score: When your kid knows Chota Bheem more than a street dog’s daily fun tricks.

ZERO Score: When your kid demand biscuit and chocolate and packaged wafers more often than food prepared by mother or grand mother.

So, how many zeroes did you get? 🙂 Get well soon. There is never late in changing bad practices.

All living organisms except humans play their critical role in ecology. It is just we who act as arrogantly moronic consumers who knows only how to consume and never ever play active role as part of ecology.

What do we deserve? A kick on the ass and face in the mud? Well, we deserve worse than a kick and a spoiled face.

Do you grow your kids as ecologically sensitive citizens or help them become partners in crime? Does your kid bow to the mother earth daily with highest reverence? Does your kid feed Gau and other animals before taking meal? Does your kid plant a tree every year?

Well, they don’t do all of this because parents are arrogant and selfish humans who never act as part of ecology. Unfortunate kids who grow in artificial toxic selfish urban homes under the patronage of selfish helpless ignorant parents.

Unless you are pharmacist or doctor yourself, will you give medicines to your child mindlessly?

Then why early life gadget exposure? Research after research, report after report recommends ZERO EXPOSURE to screen devices for infants and kids below 2 years!

Why can’t parents understand this simple thing?

Too much time using digital media in the wrong way is linked to children’s quality of sleep, child development and physical health, the statement notes. (Heavy media use in preschool is associated with small but significant increases in body mass index.)

The guidelines recommend banning digital media use an hour before bed, turning off devices when not in use and keeping bedrooms, mealtimes and parent-child playtime screen free.

Conclusions

New digital and social media facilitate and promote social interactions as well as participation and engagement that involve both viewing and creating content. The effects of media use, however, are multifactorial and depend on the type of media, the type of use, the amount and extent of use, and the characteristics of the individual child or adolescent using the media. Children today are growing up in an era of highly personalized media use experiences; therefore, parents should be encouraged to develop personalized Family Media Use Plans for their families that attend to each child’s age, health, temperament, and developmental stage and ensure that each child can practice and benefit from the essentials for healthy growth and development, such as a healthy diet, good sleep hygiene, adequate physical activity, and positive social interactions.

Parents should recognize and understand their own roles in modeling appropriate media use and balance between media time and other activities. Pediatricians can help families identify and adopt a healthy Family Media Use Plan, minimize unhealthy habits and behaviors, and recognize and address issues that occur related to the use of traditional and new media that can negatively affect health, wellness, social and personal development, and academic performance and success.

But right now, we are living in very danger time where motherhood is targeted constantly under the umbrella of “Feminism”. Market forces in global world knows very well that India is biggest market and we can turn Indians into zombie consumerist, only when we break their family system. Only an exceptional mother gives birth to a child – who does not get extremely happy on reception of wealth, who does not get sad on the arrival of bad times, who does not become a coward in a war because of fear. The child with such qualities is a crown jewel of the world.

Curse of nearsightedness: Modern Schooling & Careless Parenting

Higher ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation exposure, directly related to time outdoors and sunlight exposure, was associated with reduced odds of myopia (nearsightedness), and exposure to UVB between ages 14 and 29 years was associated with the highest reduction in odds of adult myopia, according to a study published online by JAMA Ophthalmology.
 
Myopia is a complex trait influenced by numerous environmental and genetic factors and is becoming more common worldwide, most dramatically in urban Asia, but rises in prevalence have also been identified in the United States and Europe. This has major implications, both visually and financially, for the global burden from this potentially sight-threatening condition.

Increased UVB Exposure Associated with Reduced Risk of Nearsightedness, Particularly In Teens, Young Adults

 
Astrid E. Fletcher, Ph.D., of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and colleagues examined the association of myopia with UVB radiation, serum vitamin D concentrations and vitamin D pathway genetic variants, adjusting for years in education. The study included a random sample of participants 65 years and older from 6 study centers from the European Eye Study. Of 4,187 participants, 4,166 attended an eye examination including refraction, gave a blood sample, and were interviewed by trained fieldworkers using a structured questionnaire. After exclusion for various factors, the final study group included 371 participants with myopia and 2,797 without.
 
The researchers found that an increase in UVB exposure at age 14 to 19 years and 20 to 39 years was associated with reduced odds of myopia; those in the highest tertile (group) of years of education had twice the odds of myopia. No independent associations between myopia and serum vitamin D3 concentrations or variants in genes associated with vitamin D metabolism were found. An unexpected finding was that the highest quintile (group) of plasma lutein concentrations was associated with reduced odds of myopia.
 
“The association between UVB, education, and myopia remained even after respective adjustment. This suggests that the high rate of myopia associated with educational attainment is not solely mediated by lack of time outdoors,” the authors write.
 
“As the protective effect of time spent outdoors is increasingly used in clinical interventions, a greater understanding of the mechanisms and life stages at which benefit is conferred is warranted.”

Few days back, we had discussion : Why kids must be sent to resident school, or as popularly known in Hindu homes i.e . Gurukul?

Why kid must change living as per Guru’s kul after certain age?

Reason is : Hardwired maternal (as well as paternal) instinct. And when parents can’t realize this biological flaw, they act as Dhritrashtra-Gandhari, who were also obsessed by their kids. Result is known to everyone.

As a firm believer of Santana dharma, I don’t really need to find answers for it but for fellow travelers, I try to find answers in their own language i.e. modern science.

Biological mother and even foster mothers (early childhood exposure to mother like figures i.e.  grand mothers, aunts, neighbors, teachers) – they all have hardwired brain, a brain to cater highest possible emotions and care. This care is very much needed in early childhood. However, if it continues for longer time of childhood, it become sweet poison for kid and may turn kid into fragile baby, only grown up in body but not in mind. That 25 years old kid will still ask mother for any crucial life decision. Nothing wrong in it on mother’s side. She must guide kid for entire life. However, it is folly on son/daughter’s life as they can’t drive their life by own. To me, it is not impediment in ultimate life goal i.e. स्वविकास/आत्मसाक्षात्कार/self-realization.

This research says that, when you become mother, your brain is hardwired for care and protecting of kids. Mother will do everything for kid’s protection.

The point I wish to bring to the table is: Overprotection or even normal protection in homely environment, will limit child’s true potential. Let him or her explore his/her true potential and that is possible when they are away after certain age (The Upanayana Sanskar age – varies from age 5 to 11)

A mother’s “basic instinct” to grab her wandering offspring and return them to the nest depends on a specific set of brain cell signals, a new study in mice finds.

“Our study shows precisely how a maternal instinct is generated in the mammalian brain,” says study senior investigator Dayu Lin, PhD, an assistant professor at the Neuroscience Institute at NYU Langone Health.

Dr. Lin says that because evolution has conserved biochemistry in most mammals, the findings may help to explain human maternal behaviors, such as breastfeeding and rocking a newborn, and could suggest new ways to help new mothers who have trouble nursing or bonding with their infants.

“Moreover, we believe that the findings overturn the longstanding idea that the dopamine system produces a ‘rush’ after a good behavior, and argue instead that dopamine may drive actions before any satisfaction is felt,” says Dr. Lin.

On top of it, 5 years old dancing on adult songs. 10 years old doing double meaning comedy? Adults on show passing adult comments?

Forcing children in well scripted Talent show/reality shows is not child labour torture?

In most of the cases, it is parents Attention greed, trying to live own dream by kids act, that drives children crazy.

Any child NGO working on it? Making future citizens fame hungry…not a crime against society? Do we realize psychological impact in their future life?

“Everything in limit is fine? You must occasionally allow kids to eat chocolates. And if you are not doing so, your parenting style is against the growth of kids in modern times!”

Let us count few obvious occasions.

1) 40 peers @ school – 40 chocolates days
2) Add 20 neighborhood friends. 60 chocolate days per year.
3) Add 20 family and friends birthdays. 80 chocolate days per year.
4) Add 50 casual offering by parents, grandparents, relatives.

130 chocolate days per year. Is this limit? 35% is good limit?

Btw, as per this news, over 40% Irish parents give their children sweets daily.

More than 40 per cent of Irish parents are giving their children unhealthy treats like chocolate, crisps and sweets more than once a day.

The new research from Safefood, the food safety promotion board, published on Monday showed the majority of parents (73 per cent) did not consider these types of foods as treats.

Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, director of human health and nutrition at Safefood, said an over consumption of these treats was a “serious threat” to children’s health.

“As parents, we need to break the bad habits of giving these every day as it’s now become the norm and not really a ‘treat’ anymore,” she said.

“ Parents are really finding this difficult and these products are simply empty calories.”

Children aged five and under were the age group given the most daily “treats” at 50 per cent.
