Love for plastic and Depression

In our race to hug western way of living, we are unknowingly inviting doomed future for our next generation.

As per below research, exposure to chemical BPA used in plastics may be more likely to develop symptoms of anxiety and depression at age 10-12.

Prenatal BPA Exposure Linked to Anxiety and Depression in Boys

BPA is a component of some plastics and is found in food containers, plastic water bottles, dental sealants, and thermal receipt paper. In the body, BPA is a synthetic estrogen, one of the class of chemicals known as “endocrine disruptors.” The Columbia researchers, led byFrederica Perera, PhD, DrPH, director of CCCEH, previously reported that prenatal exposure to BPA was associated with emotionally reactive and aggressive behavior, and more symptoms of anxiety and depression in boys at age 7-9.

Perera and her co-investigators followed 241 nonsmoking pregnant women and their children, a subset of CCCEH’s longstanding urban birth cohort study in New York City, from pregnancy through childhood. To measure the amount of BPA that had been absorbed in the body, researchers collected a urine sample from the mothers during the third trimester of their pregnancy, and from the children at age 3 and age 5. At ages 10-12, children completed an interview with a trained researcher about their symptoms of depression and completed a self-assessment that measures anxiety.

Significant positive associations between prenatal BPA and symptoms of depression and anxiety were observed among boys. Postnatal BPA exposure was not significantly associated with outcomes. There was substantial co-occurrence of anxiety and depressive symptoms in this sample.

Toddler and Punishment : धर्मं & प्रायश्चित्त

Punishment and children
Punishment and children

No other species punishes its offspring. They encourage innovations and mistakes as these are the stepping steps on the natural growth process.

Discipline in our culture was never to mold children as a obedient worker of the system but for the self-realization of fellow human being in our child. What is happening now is, in name of discipline, we are making children slaves of the system.

If discipline (यम,नियम and other tenets of Yoga) are introduced at right age, no punishment is needed. Each child is special and has different mental growth. Each one of them become ready for अष्टांग योग (१) यम, २) नियम, ३) आसन, ४) प्राणायाम, ५) प्रत्याहार, ६) धारणा ७) ध्यान ८) समाधि), the ultimate self-discipline. Some children are ready at age 5, some at 7, some at 9 and very few at age 11 (popularly known as YAgnopavit Sanskar). Till then parents and teachers must not interfere with their learning. We can only protect them from self-harm.

Even after demonstrating them self-discipline during student life, if they do not follow it as an adult, punishment comes at the last resort. Before punishment, several rounds of प्रायश्चित्त.

Punishment or दण्ड is really a last resort for adult. Never for innocent and growing children.

Take care.

Punishment doesn’t
solve the problem;
it intensifies it.

PS: Punishment led Childhood : Reason why so many of us demand harsh punishments for rape and other crimes. 🙂 No one wants to prevent the crimes. 🙂

Research: Food commercials influence children’s food choices

Many a times, parents argue with me that, after all, Cartoon network is innocent entertainment!
What parents ignores is: Flood of Advertisements! Will you please listen to pediatricians?
While ideal child development should be season driven and innate prakriti driven, large part of human society is raised by Television 🙁

The Influence of Televised Food Commercials on Children’s Food Choices: Evidence from Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Activations

Stephen W. Pruitt, PhD, Oh-Ryeong Ha, PhD, J. Bradley C. Cherry, JD, Timothy R. Smith, MD, Jared M. Bruce, PhD, Seung-Lark Lim, PhD

Food advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry, with approximately $1.8 billion annually aimed at children and adolescents, who view between 1,000 and 2,000 ads per year. Some studies have shown that there is a relationship between receptivity to food commercials and the amount and type of food consumed. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers studied the brain activity of children after watching food commercials and found that the commercials influence children’s food choices and brain activity.

The researchers found that, overall, the children’s decisions were driven by tastiness rather than healthfulness. However, taste was even more important to the children after watching food commercials compared with non-food commercials; faster decision times (i.e., how quickly the children decided whether they wanted to eat the food item shown) also were observed after watching food commercials. Additionally, the ventromedial prefrontal cortices of the children were significantly more active after watching food commercials.

Food marketing has been cited as a significant factor in food choices, overeating, and obesity in children and adolescents. The results of this study show that watching food commercials may change the way children value taste, increasing the potential for children to make faster, more impulsive food choices. Notes Dr. Bruce, “Food marketing may systematically alter the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of children’s food decisions.”

Children: Language learning and social activities

Parents must not use shortcuts. Stories on tablets, cartoons on TV are not useful. If you want your kid to learn and excel in multiple languages, let there be more opportunities for social interactions. Your babies demand your time. Human interactions. Even if they cannot speak full words and sentences, speak with them! Communicate! Gestures, expressions and surprises! Tablet and TV cannot give gestures and expressions!

“We found that the degree to which infants visually tracked the tutors and the toys they held was linked to brain measures of infant learning, showing that social behaviors give helpful information to babies in a complex natural language learning situation,” Kuhl said.

“Our findings show that young babies’ social engagement contributes to their own language learning – they’re not just passive listeners of language,” Brooks said. “They’re paying attention, and showing parents they’re ready to learn when they’re looking back and forth. That’s when the most learning happens.”

Child Development is an essential social forestry (सामाजिक वनीकरण)

Child Development - Social responsibility
Child Development – Social responsibility

There are 100 families in one urban residential area. All of them decided to grow mango tree. 25 families believed that…mango tree should be exposed to all natural/man-made conditions so they decided to take no care of mango trees. Out of 25 orphan trees, 10 trees grew well and 15 died premature death after 3 months.

10 families were happy: “See, we told you. You don’t need to over conscious about trees. Let them grow as is and they will be fine. You unnecessary worry about mango trees. We just need to grow them and they will grow by learning from us and others. No extra care is required.”

So why did 10 orphan trees could survive and 15 died?
Three factors play role in growth of any organism
1) Seed quality 2) Environment 3) Eco-system

25 trees were lacking environmental help in terms of their caretaker so their chances of survival was reduced to 66%. Some of them were near trees who were taken care and had superior quality of seed so 10 trees could survive. 15 were unfortunate – they either lacked seed quality or eco-support (Support from other mango trees and their caretakers) or both.

Child development is like growing and nurturing mango tree. If you are carefree and firm believer that…let the child exposed to everything…and still your child is growing as expected, you and your kid are lucky ! Despite your carelessness, his/her eco-support (good teacher, good friends, good parents of their friends etc) and inherent seed quality or both helped him/her.
But still, your duty is compromised so there will be some compromise with development.

Seed quality of child development : Healthy food before and during pregnancy. Healthy habits. Stress-free home and work environment.

Environment: Food, Water, Air

Eco-System : Family, friends, neighbours

Growing child need all! He or she can grow without all luxuries you provide but not without healthy communities.

Children, Air pollution and common sense

Children and Air pollution
Children and Air pollution

The breathing rate over the first 12 years of life is about double that of adult breathing rate. So good air or bad air, children consume more.

For your healthy lungs, thank pre-1991 (Before Manmohan era of mindless development) Indians who were not as mindless as we are. Imagine what we gift to millions of children by rampant urban air pollution.

Greatest gift we give to our children: Suffocating air. 🙁 Yes, I am also partner in crime, like you all. 🙁

Although this is not a solution, I suggest you to have Fresh-Air-Sundays with kids. Away from urban crowd, in the laps of the nature, for weekly fresh air quota. (Y)

Children, Food Selection and Convoluted Logic

There was a comment on my post on industrial meat and brain infection relation. It was like this:

Though I am a vegetarian, I feel bad when I see my non-veg eating friends who are more fit and comparatively more disease free. They do no have Vitamin B12 deficiency issues. Few proudly say:

“I am eating food (veg/non-veg) in hotels from last 15 years, I am perfectly healthy”.

“I eat and drink everything without thinking much about it, I have no health problem”

This article and my observations are not matching. There are several times I feel that I should start having meat.

I also receive same comments from many of my real life friends and relatives. One rational and so called liberal friend argued with me last night: ” I eat all kinds of food all the time for more than a decade. I am healthy so will be my child. I want my child to be fearless and eat anything and prepare body.”

🙂 This is I recognize as Convoluted logic to defend personal weaknesses.

First of all: Do we live life to eat or eat to live? Think about it.

Second: I really am not positive for adults past-25 age changing their habits. It hardly happens until they reach 40 and body stops supporting their habits. I prefer not to convince them.

What I am worried about and expect change is about our children. Future of Bharat. If we can guide children and provide them environment for healthy habits, we can envision much stronger generation than what we have at present. That is the opportunity we should focus on.

My response to this friend:

“Children eat and drink more than adults in relation to their body weight, and so take in relatively more residues.US figures show that, generally, children in the first six months of life consume seven times more water per kg of body weight than does the average adult.

Include artificial fruit juices, baby foods and all range of so called healthy but processed foods! 🙂

So who is more susceptible to toxins in processed and chemically grown food? We or our kids?

Take care. In your false arrogance and careless attitude towards food selection, you are doing injustice to growing possibilities in your child.”

So, it is idiotic and monstrous when you force your kid to eat same filthy restaurant food. Just because you don’t like cooking or have tongue-lust, your kid will suffer! I remember, I never eat outside food until I joined engineering college away from home. And I never felt the needed because my beloved mother cooked all superb food for us 🙂

Infants and young children have specific nutritional needs. They need up to 7 times more nutrients than an adult (per kg body weight). Therefore, with every spoon, a child has to eat significantly more nutrients than an adult.

Read this to realize and stop treating your kid as adult, for their food, entertainment and other needs!

Generation in jeopardy : How pesticides ruin our children

Go to any school. You will find more and more aggression, attention deficit, anti-social patterns. Sadly, teachers and parents accept this as new normal. 🙁

Can your 6 figure salary, all luxury provided to kid avoid this? And there is no magic wand that you can apply to development derailment of growing generation. Only right food, right emotions and your ample time can save them!

Time is running fast. Get back control over your food chain. Demand more and more organic food. Cook fresh food for children. No more processed food.

Before earning for family, I think it is now critical for any parents to find fresh, chemical-free food for kids. What is the use of our earning when we buy chemicals as food for our kids?

Learning disabilities, childhood cancer and asthma are on the rise in the United States. A new report out today points to pesticides – with over 1 billion pounds applied on farms and homes annually in the US– as a critical contributor to these health harms in children. In Los Angeles alone, nearly 2 million pounds of pesticides are applied annually.

This is situation of the land where we think rules are followed. Imagine the situation here where there is free-flow usage of chemicals. On top of it, chemicals used to process the food.

“We have waited much, much too long to make the health of our children a national priority,” said Martha Dina Argüello of Physicians for Social Responsibility- Los Angeles. “This report shines a light on a completely preventable tragedy – that a generation of children will not reach their full potential. This represents a truly staggering loss we can no longer ignore.”

“Pesticides have unique and profound impacts on the developing child, even in very small amounts. The growing body of research tells us that pesticides, in combination with other environmental and behavioral factors, are creating a looming epidemic of diseases and disorders,” states Argüello. “We must act now so we are not putting another generation of children in harm’s way.”

“What matters is that our children’s bodies have become garbage cans! Everyday, I cry because of those diseases simply caused by the environment. More people have died because of chemicals than during World War II. Those who don’t want to see any cause for concern in our studies will have to answer for their serious dishonesty.”

Liquor Seller : Role Model?

Role Model?
Role Model?

Can you hide this fact from your kid that his/her so called role model is also a Whiskey salesman?

Teens and age below 16, do not have developed discriminatory intellect (as their brain is still growing) which can decide right vs wrong. For them, whatever their role model does, is right. Parents are role model Parent’s role models are their role models. TV gives them new bunch of role models.

So do not get surprised if your teen age boy is caught drinking whiskey with friends after playing Dhoni style cricket.

Is Dhoni your child’s role model? Take care.

This is not just about Dhoni. Entire Bollywood and Cricket clan is useless and not worth to follow. So what to do?
Find out जनक ! You must find Janak for your child. No matter how intelligent and learned you are, you will fail to convince your son/daughter certain important things about life. That’s where your learned friends will play the role in crafting your child’s destiny. I call such friends as real जनक. Real नंद.

Even Seer व्यास had to send शुक to जनक, to convince him about marriage and keep him away from Vairagya delusion.

Putna, Krishna and Gau

Krishna fighting against Putna src: Google search
Krishna fighting against Putna

Each story has hidden meaning if we learn to decipher. There is popular story known in our cutlure about Avtar Krishna and Demon Putna. And how baby Krishna kills the demon Putna.

The word “Pūtanā”, broken as “Pūt” (virtue) and “nā” (no) means “devoid of virtue”. Another explanation derives “Pūtanā” from “Pūta” (purifying), thus meaning “she who purifies”.Putana (Sanskrit: Pūtanā, lit. “putrefaction”) is a Matrika, who is killed by the infant-god Krishna.

In reality, Putna is a childhood sickness. Often due to post-delivery stress, mother’s milk become vitiated and imbalance of Dosha (Kapha, Pitta, Vayu balance) happens. More often in the case of first time mothers. If child’s mother cannot feed (in case of Krishna, mother was not able to feed), foster-mother feed. If this foster-mother’s intentions are not good, has no love for the child, milk becomes poison. And Putna arrives to kill or hamper the growth of the child.

Due to drinking such milk, infant’s body’s Vayu is aggravated and so infant suffers from Lack of sleep, diarrhea & constant thrist and constant crying. That is Putna.

If not taken care, infant dies. This is one of the primary cause of infant mortality.

Baby-Krishna could survive such vitiated milk. And that is how he killed the Putna!

Pippali and trifala churna with ghee and honey.

Needless to mention that Krishna was living with Nanda the Cow expert. So he must have got this treatment immediately. And since he took birth with perfect body, it was easy for him to fight against poisoned milk.

Things to take care:
1) Never give ghee and honey in same quantity i.e. 1 ml ghee + 1 ml honey = this is not preferable.
2) Purity of the sources. Ghee prepared from ethically procured milk and prepared by churning. Honey procured ethically without harming bees.

This is the reason, feeding mother should never take stress of any kind. She should be always cheerful and stress-free. Her food should be rich and wholesome prepared by someone who has highest love for both newly became mother and infant. And so post-delivery, new mother prefers to live with her mother. 🙂
