आहार मात्रा control is fundamental preventive cure for remaining healthy. It changes for each individual. Age, sex, prakriti, season, place play critical role in determining it.

But the most important factor that affects the optimum आहार मात्रा is अग्निबल (Individual digestive and assimilation capacity.). Your metabolic status.

True secular education equips students to check own self every morning and decide daily आहार मात्रा.

Any school teaching this? Parents?

Fire Rituals and Our Mind

The process of Yajna (Yagna / Fire ritual) does not mere happen on material plane but also mental plane. In a faithfully performed fire ritual, the performer and participants, burn his/her mental vikrutis/disorders progressively, by concentration on selected Devata through Agni Devata as medium.

Since our Manomay sharir(s) are connected with universal mind, we can connect with minds of anybody and everyone with intense sadhana, once own mind is purified. At that juncture of Sadhana, one can help World by reducing pollution (Vikruti) in others minds and inject thoughts. (To understand this better,watch movie inception again with this context). Healthy Universal mind(s) means dharmic actions by majority in society. Although it is very crude and simple analogy, compare it with cloud computing to understand.

Fire ritual is a potent and to me game-changer ritual to reduce world miseries in this age of Tamas.

Smoke Or dhUmra : Kill or Cure

Like reductionist attitude teach you to see microbial universe as enemy, same narrowed vision force you to consider smoke as killer, always.

धूम्र or Smoky is not always bad. Many children and old agers fall sick by this seasonal transition trap. Visit any children hospital and you will see nebulizer in use.

In medicine, a nebulizer or nebuliser (see spelling differences) is a drug delivery device used to administer medication in the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs. Nebulizers are commonly used for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases.

The delivery of aerosolized medication is an important component of treatment for many respiratory disorders in children. Glucocorticoids, bronchodilators, antibiotics, mucus hydration agents, and mucolytic agents can be administered via aerosol.

Now when I open कश्यप संहिता, I read this:

एतैर्बालान्‌ समापन्नान्‌ अरिष्टागारमेव च ।
वस्त्रशय्यासनाद्यं च बालानां धूपयेत्‌ भिषक्‌ ।।

This chapter is dedicated to Dhoopa(s). For children. Total 40 types of fumigations are prescribed. If taken care properly, it can prevent many child diseases. Invasive procedures instill fear in children and so dhoop like non-invasive therapy is prescribed for children so that they can grow fearlessly with minimum invasion of body.

nebulizer is modern and good.
But dhoop is old age, primitive and harmful!

Is this not biased mindset? Compare to nebulizer, dhoop is better penetrating and effective. It is preventive. And yet, we prefer to ignore it.

In depth research on dhoop is needed. If MBBS student has open mind, this is perfect subject for research. And please, Smoke’s badness and goodness is relative. What you offer to Fire matters. How you handle the fire matters.

DhuMra is medicine. Very efficient.

Agni in Ayurveda : Part 2 : Panchmahabhuta

In last part, we tried to understand word Pitta’s meanings and relation with Agni. In this, we will begin by understanding Agni in terms of Panchamahabhuta.

The world is formed by five basic elemental states called पञ्चमहाभूत. They are Prithvi, Apa, Teja, Vayu and Akash.

What is Panchamahabhuta? (पञ्चमहाभूत)

***पञ्चमहाभूत क्या होते हैं ?
जिनसे समग्र भौतिक पदार्थों का निर्माण हुआ है, उनको पञ्चमहाभूत कहा जाता है ।

पञ्चमहाभूत कौन कौन से हैं ?

(१) पृथिवी
(२) अग्नि
(३) जल
(४) वायु
(५) आकाश

सर्वं द्रव्यं पाञ्चभौतिकम् | Every substance contains all five states. Mark the difference here. Unlike modern science, we are not yet identifying elements as in chemistry. These are 5 different states. All substances gets its properties, characteristics or design from the permutations and combinations of these five basic states and their contribution in present state of the substance.

Material world as we see, and are being part of it, is evolved out of the mula Prakriti. All matter of the world have three basic properties i.e. Sattva, rajas, tamas. Transformation of the universe is not possible without these three properties. These properties are confined in mula prakriti in the state of balance in an unmanifest form. The शून्य स्थिति. When the equilibrium is lost, manifested world emerges.

In this process of becoming manifest, mula prakriti creates Mahat or Buddhi. Then emerges Ego. This is followed by creation of Manas and set of Indriya (mind and senses).

As per Sankhya philosophy, senses are formed from the Sattva part of ego, with the help of Rajas. The तन्मात्रा(s) are formed from Tamas, with the help of rajas.

And from these तन्मात्रा(s), panch-mahabhuta(s) emerges.

Before we understand Panch-mahabhita, it is good to understand our core nature, मूल प्रकृति or our base class.

Here is the first part of N-part series.

शरीर, as per Sanskrit roots, is that which continuously undergoes destruction, catabolic nature. Degeneration, decay, to be rendered to pieces are natural phenomenon for शरीर.

देह , as per Sanskrit roots, that which continuously grow, anabolic nature. To develop and grow into larger identity is natural phenomenon for देह.

काया = शरीर + देह = Anabolic + Catabolic = Construction + Destruction

Ayurveda works on three level of Sharir

1) स्थूल (Gross Body) २) शुक्ष्म (Subtle body) ३) कारण (Casual body)

Gross body is made up of 5 basic elements i.e. पंचमहाभूत
Subtle body is made up of 5 तन्मात्रा (English translation – Sorry I don’t have)
Casual body signifies त्रिगुण (sattva, rajas, tamas) impressions.

5 basic elements are

आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल, पृथ्वी

Their essence is called तन्मात्रा

तन्मात्रा(s) are subtle and beyond our perceptions. They are unmixed with other kind of material, property or energy.

5 Tanmatras are : Sound, Touch, Form, Taste and smell.

As long as Agni is concerned, it is Rupa or Form that predominates. And so Agni state represents body complexion, sharpness, digestion and penetration. It is responsible for Vision (not just physical vision but all sorts of visions). Special attributes are Temperature and Conversion.

As per Charak, Shushrut and Vagbhatta, Agni elemental state dominates Pitta.

In terms of Dosha, fire represents Pitta, with the help of Apa(water).

In terms of Guna, fire represents Rajas, with the help of Vayu.

What are the characteristics?

रूक्ष-तीक्ष्ण-उष्ण-विशद-सूक्ष्म-रूप-गुण-उल्बणम् | आग्नेयं दाह-भा-वर्ण-प्रकाश-पचनात्मकम्||

अल्प स्निग्ध, तीक्ष्ण, उष्ण, लघु, सूक्ष्म

विशुद्ध पित्त कड़वा व पीले वर्ण का होता है।

विकृत पित्त खट्टा व नीले वर्ण का होता है।

Since Pitta has Agni predominated but also contains Apa, it is in liquid state.

So it is important for Pitta dravya to represent Fire element. Whenever fire element is reduced in dravya, it is mere Apa or water. And when it is water, it won’t work as expected.

Sense to the level of Tanmatra when you try to realize pitta in your body.

 

 

Agni in Ayurveda – 1

[ As I described in this ( Prana – ultimate medicine ) note that , if we have control over प्राणमय कोश, and not attachment with gross body (अन्नमय कोष) , it is not difficult to manage disease-free life as प्राण is the ultimate भेषज (medicine). Since it is not possible without practice and sadhana, we must try to understand अन्नमय sharir. Well-being of अन्नमय कोष depends upon digestion process. GUT is the center for sthul/gross body. For that, understanding fire is important. As I learn and realize, I will share notes on fire in this series of notes. ]

In Ayurved, Agni is one of the important factors which is required to be examined before initiating the treatment of a patient. The role of agni in the animal body is very much emphasized in Ayurved. It is stated that all internal diseases are caused by the vitiation of this agni and this is the pivot round which the remaining factors responsible for the maintenance of health and causation of diseases as well as decay revolve.

In Ayurved, human body is considered as a replica of the universe; whatever is available in the universe they are all represented in the human body, may be in a modified form. The physical agni (fire) is directly linked up with the biological agni inside the human body.

It is, impossible to explain or comprehend the biological phenomena described in Ayurveda without having a good background of the material objects enunciated in these ancient philosophical works. In fact a rational explanation of various aspects of agni can better be provided if its relation with physical agni is elucidated.

Agni in Ayurveda is described as pitta of the system [1]. Since Agni is described in terms of pitta, it is important to know, what does pitta mean?

पित्त is derived from the root तप. ‘तप संतापे’ धातु से कृदन्त विहित प्रत्यय द्वारा ‘तपति इति पित्तं’. The one that generates heat. The one that burns. This term has three meanings associated with it.

  1. तप संदाहे – Burning of nutrition consumed
  2. तप ऐश्वर्ये – a substance which endows auspiciousness
  3. तप संतापे – Generation of heat

Since Pitta performs fire life actions, it is described as Agni in Ayurveda. Some of the functions associated with Pitta are: Splitting food, burning, combustion, oxidation, heat production, conversion. In short, Pitta digest the food and transform it into various active body tissues.

There is a saying in Ayurveda that a person is as old as his or her agni. Krushn, Bhishma and Arjun at battleground, are shining examples of powerful Agni.

Charaka Samhita describes:

“The span of life, health, immunity, energy, metabolism, complexion, strength, enthusiasm, luster, and the vital breath are all dependent on agni (bodily fire). One lives a long healthy life if it is functioning properly, becomes sick if it is deranged, or dies if this fire is extinguished. Proper nourishment of the body, dhatus, ojas, etc., depends upon the proper functioning of agni in digestion.

“The five types of agni, corresponding to ether, air, fire, water, and earth, digest the respective components of the food.… In this way, balanced agni cooks the appropriately chosen and timely consumed food, and leads to promotion of health.…

“Agni is necessary for the normal process of digestion, and the subtle energy of agni transforms the lifeless molecules of food, water, and air into the consciousness of the cell.”

Start your day by worshiping eternal fire. Remember and re-iterate your worship through-out the day. Popular word for this worship is Sandhya.
